On January 5, the Lady Redskins got off on the right foot of the 2023 New Years Classic with a 48 to 37 win over the Broken Bow Lady Savages. There was quite a bit of rust the girls had to knock off from the Christmas break and hopefully it’s all gone.

The first quarter was close in score, mainly because both teams seemed to have a problem finding the handle on the ball. Turnovers were coming right and left for both teams. Olivia Quapaw got off to a good start with a three pointer and a two-point bucket.

The second quarter was no different than the first, turnover wise. Emily Bellettini did her best work from the free throw line where she was 4 of 4. Thanks to the three pointer and two free throws from Kaya Wiebener, the Lady Redskins held on to a one-point lead, 20 to 19, at the half.

The Lady Redskins came out in the third and spread the ball around and five players scored. French again had a three, Wiebener hit her second three of the night, Bellettini and Quapaw both had buckets. Herndon had a bucket and was 2 of 3 from the line. Finally, a little breathing room as the Lady Redskins took a 34 to 26 lead to the fourth.

French made it hard on the Lady Savages by hitting her third three pointer of the game and she was 2 of 3 from the free throw line. Kamry Bohannon picked a perfect time to get into her scoring. She hit a three and a two-point basket and added a free throw.

Coach Chad Rumer and his#9class3ALadyRedskins faced the #7 class 3A Silo Lady Rebels on January 6. Kingston beat the Rebels in the second round of the New Year’s Classic.

Both teams have good followings and it was perhaps the best crowd of the tournament, a full house. It was a four-quarter battle and the Lady Redskins come out on top, 54 to 44. T Rumerhadhisgirlsamped up and ready to play in the first. Olivia Quapaw came out quickly with two buckets and a three pointer. Kamry Bohannon was off to a good start with a three pointer. In the second, the front court of Ethel Stewart, Bohannon and Bellettini did the heavy lifting. Stewart had a bucket on a reverse under the goal. Bohannon got her second three pointer and added another field goal. She got to the line going 1 of 3. Bellettini added a three pointer to her total. She missed her only free throw attempt. Kingston headed to the locker room with a five-point cushion, 28 to 23.

Coach Rumer must have given one heck of a pep talk in the locker. The girls immediately jumped out to extend the lead and the Lady Rebels could not recover. Quapaw again had a three pointer, another field goal and a free throw. Lanie French hit a three.

Bohannon was everywhere. She had a three pointer and two field goals. On defense, she was wreaking havoc on Silo as they were trying to get past her. Kaya Wiebener had a long three pointer. That’s four three pointers in the quarter by four different shooters. This extended the lead 47 to 28.

The fourth quarter had its share of excitement as Quapaw picked up a fourth foul and with the excitement, did not deliver the ball back to the referee as he would have liked it. He quickly added a technical and that made five fouls. She was done for the night. That was at the 4:36 mark.

No problem, French was there to take up the slack. A minute later she fell hard on her ankle and had to be assisted to the bench by her teammates. Herndon was charged with the ball handling for the remainder of the game. Silo fouled her and sent her to the line. Then they fouled here two more times. She responded going 5 of 7 in the quarter. Bohannon had another field goal and the Lady Redskins held on to win, 54 to 44.

Box score: Kamry Bohannon had possibly the best overall game of her career. She finished with 16 points to lead the team. With the rebounds and steals and assists, it was just a complete game.
