Hey, can you watch what you’re doing?

A little less than half of the entire population receives an annual flu shot. Even though that seems like a small number, think about it globally. That is trillions of people getting a flu shot.

Being that the ratio of people getting the flu shots to pharmacist is lopsided, that means there are more people than pharmacists. The reason I brought this up is to point out that a pharmacist will more than likely give hundreds of flu shots during any given season.

Meaning, the pharmacist should be well versed on flu shots. So, tell me how a pharmacist in Bartlesville mistakenly dosed ten people with insulin instead of the flu vaccine?

I mean, yes, they probably look the same. However, it was a mobile clinic that showed up to a home for the developmentally disabled with vials of insulin. How could the pharmacist possibly mistake the vials of insulin for the flu vaccine while loading up their bag?

Also, it’s not like any “joe schmo” from off the street can walk into a pharmacy and start filling prescriptions.

It is almost as like going to med school.

They need a Doctor of Pharmacy, which takes almost eight years of school, to practice.

The worst part about the recent blunder, was the residents had no way of telling the nurses on site what was wrong. They had no communication skills. Eight of the ten who were wrongly injected were found passed out in their rooms and different parts of the center.

Thankfully, they were found in time. It could have ended way worse.

I guess what I am trying to say is, pay attention!

If you are going to become a pharmacist, people’s lives depend on you being thorough.

You are right up there with an airplane mechanic; the slightest mistake could cause to be catastrophic for a large amount of people.
