Coming off a strong Week three victory over Lone Grove, the Madill Wildcats lookedto improve their record to 2-2 on the season when they visited the Cushing Tigers on Sept. 27.

However, the visitors from Marshall County were soon to be left licking their wounds as the hosts ran wild for a 53-6 victory.

Cushing was coming off of three losses to ranked opponents to start their season. The opponents (Bristow, Perkins and Berryhill) are a combined 11-1 thus far in 2019.

The result meant Madill dropped to 1-3 on the year while Cushing improved to 1-3.

The hosts started off the game with a nine-yard touchdown run by senior running back Champ Wright on their first drive. The score came with 10:21 left in the first quarter.

Madill’s first possession did not end as well. After being stifled, the Wildcats lined up to punt when a high snap nearly went over the head of sophomore kicker/punter Francisco Perez. Perez moved quickly to knock the ball down to prevent a further loss.

Cushing started the resulting drive from the Madill 14.

Although the Wildcat defensive front applied some pressure on Cushing senior quarterback Will Moyer, he was able to connect with freshman wide receiver Camden Crooks for an 18-yard touchdown pass.

Cushing juniorkickerChanceKindley missed the extra point attempt to leave the score Cushing 13, Madill 0 with 7:19 to go in the first quarter.

The problems piled up for the Wildcats as a fumble in the backfield ended their next possession.

This time, Cushing started on the Madill 26. The Tigers used the short field to their advantage and scored again; this time on a 13-yard pass from Moyer to senior wide receiver Harrison Wood. This time senior Koby Floyd came on to convert the extra point and move the score to 20-0 in favor of the hosts.

Madill’s offense finally started to drive downfield as the first quarter wound down. The Wildcat offense was powered by their running game as senior fullback John Venable, senior running back Mateo Fajardo and sophomore slot Trey Gammil all gained positive yardage.

The rout is on

It was more of the same in the second quarter as Cushing continued to roll.

Moyer connected with senior wide receiver Keaton Cooks for a 42-yard touchdown early in the period.

Moyer and Wood hooked up for their second score of the night just before halftime.

Sandwiched in between the touchdown passes was a six-yard score by freshman running back Noah Jones.

Jones also had a highlight reel run 20-yard that included a spin move to evade a handful of Madill defenders.

During the rest of the quarter, Madill’s offense continued to be stifled as the Cushing defense routinely put eight players in the box.

Madill did have one drive that went into Cushing territory behind the running of Fajardo and Venable.

However, the drive eventually stalled out on the Cushing 38-yard line as Madill turned the ball over on downs.

Fajardo was able to gain seven yards on the last play of the second quarter, but Cushing already held a 40-0 lead at that point.

The Wildcats got the ball to start the second half and started to threaten. Among the highlights of the drive were nine-yard and 12-yard runs by Venable, and a 20-yard run by senior slot Ryan Shahan.

But keeping with one of the night’s themes, the turnover bug struck again. After a run for no gain, Venable fumbled ball for Madill’s third turnover of the night.

Madill would lose the ball once more, this time on a punt return.

Cushing started the ensuing drive at the Madill 40. Jones would go on to score again, this time on a three-yard run. Combined with a successful point after kick Cushing increased its lead to 47-0.

Madill moved some progress on their next drive until another fumble occurred; this time by quarterback Asa Robertson.

The senior ran forward and the ball hit the helmet of another player causing the ball to come loose.

As the game moved into the fourth quarter, Cushing changed quarterbacks with sophomore Shelton Davis taking over.

Davis would make his mark on his lone drive by scoring on a five-yard run down the west sideline. The extra point attempt was blocked by freshman defensive lineman River Shaw after a low snap leaving the score 53-0.

Madill was finally able to get able to on the board near the end of game as sophomore running back Jorge Martinez scored from two yards out. Francisco Perez pulled the extra point kick wide left to leave the score 53-6, which would also be the final score.

Up next for Madill is a home date Friday, October 4 versus the Tuttle Tigers.
