Redskins stay hot in 52-32 win over visitng Lone Grove Longhorns

This contest was a match between two teams going in opposite directions.

The 14 and 5 Redskins, are 11 and 2 in the new year, including winning eight games in a row.

The Longhorns are 3 and 15. The Redskins prevailed 52 to 32 in the teams’ game Feb. 11.

Kaden Johnson started things off with a three pointer in their first possession.

Drew Capps had a nice bucket off a feed from Jesse Rose. He followed it up seconds later with a layup.

LG wants a time out. Redskins lead 7 to 0. Coming out of the timeout, a steal and layup by Johnson was not what the Horns had drawn up.

Dakota Weibner hit a three from the top of the key. The score now 11 to 0.

After a nice rebound and drive up court, Marshall Ludrick hits Jesse Rose with a pretty pass that was broken up with a foul. Rose goes 1 of 2 from the line. First quarter ends 12 to 0.

In the second quarter things did not start out well for the Horns.

They scored their first basket of the night at the 6:00 mark of the second quarter. Johnson comes down splits the defense and drives all the way to the basket for a layup.

Brady Brister has a nice steal and lays it up on the other end. He follows up with another fake and drive for a layup. Jase Hays has a spin move in the lane and spins it off the glass for two.

Brister scores inside again on a lob pass. Rose hits Hays cutting for the basket and spins another one off the glass. Off a nice rebound by Braden Matchen, Johnson lays it up again. The score at the half was 23 to 7 in favor of the hosts.

Third quarter saw LG extend their defense out and pick up man to man on defense. Hays drives inside and scores.

Hays follows with a rebound and takes two steps and lets fly a pass to Rose who lays it in without dribbling.

Like a quarterback to a wide receiver, or defensive end , like Rose.

This is not the first time these footballers have hooked up like that.

Both players being juniors, maybe we will see that on the gridiron next year. Next time down and Hays again finds Rose, this time cutting underneath, for a easy basket.

The score was now at 32 to 9 with 6:30 to go in the quarter. Next time down Hays swished a nice jumper for 2.

Following a LG basket, Brister finds Rose underneath for a field goal. Ludrick hits a pretty three pointer.

Now into the game, Brycen Ellisor scorers down low. The score after three quarters, 43 to 13.

Ellisor opens up the fourth with another goal from underneath.

At the next play stoppage, Price Shore, Hayden McKinney, and Gage Gill all came in at the 6:40 mark. Rose immediately scores underneath. After a LG basket Rose scores again. After that the LG coach calls time out.

Rose goes to the bench showing Coach Taylor Weibner his arm.

I’m not sure if it was a possible injury or his arm was getting sore from scoring. With Rose you never know. At the 5:25 mark its Redskins 49 to Lone Groves 15. Matchen scores down low twice. Final score 53 to 19.

Coach Weibner was pleased after the game and had this to say “I thought the guys really played well defensively for the majority of the game. And they did well getting the ball inside to our bigs.

“They were also patient on offense and waited for good opportunities to present themselves instead of forcing the issue like we tend to do sometimes”.

Final stats: Rose lead the team with 11. Johnson had 9, followed by Hays with 8. Scoring 4 each were Brister, Ellisor, Matchen and Capps. Weibner had a three.

The Redskins travelled to Comanche on Feb. 14 before hosting Sulphur on Feb. 18.
