Boys eliminated
The Redskins and Coach Taylor Wiebener were eliminated, 71 to 50, from the Area Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 5, 2021. The matchup with #5 Christian Heritage did not look like a matchup that would favor the Redskins from the beginning.
The surprise, though, was the absolutely insane shooting display they put on. The first loss for Kingston during the Regionals at Lindsay came at the hand of #4 ranked Community Christian. As well as they shot the ball, Heritage was even more impressive. It was unfortunate to draw these teams back to back.
The first quarter looked like an avalanche coming down a mountain. Heritage came out firing and they were not missing. Meanwhile, the only Redskin that was having any luck at all was freshman Reid Cason. He had four inside buckets.
In fact, the Heritage coach called timeout at 5:29 after Cason had scored three buckets in a row. Coach Wiebener had to call timeout himself just minutes later with the Redskins trailing 20 to 10. Then, Dakota Wiebener hit a long three-pointer. Jase Hays was 2 of 2 from the line. The score after one quarter was Heritage 22 to the Redskins 13.
One might think that sooner than later the Heritage shooting would cool down. It did not happen in the second quarter. By the time the quarter was over, they had a total of eight threepointers on nine attempts.
On the Redskins end of the court, Hays had a threepointer and two, two-point goals. He was also 2 of 2 from the line. Brady Brister and Braden Matchen each had a field goal. Cason was 2 of 2 from the line. Going to the locker room, Heritage was leading 45 to 28.
In the third, Cason again had two field goals and Hays had a field goal. The score after three quarters was 61 to 36.
Fourth quarter saw Matchen and Wiebener each with three-pointers and Cason had another field goal. Hays was 2 of 2 from the line. Tucker Rumer and Drew Capps each had field goals. The final score was Heritage 71 to 50.
Box score: Cason had 18 points a nd Hays had 15. Wiebener had six and Matchen with five. Brister, Tucker Rumer and Drew Capps all with two points. As a team, from the free throw line, 10 of 10 for 100%. Another great defensive job was put in by Marshall Ludrick and Jesse Rose. Also getting minutes were Price Shore, Hayden McKinney and Tanner Shore.
The senior class of Hays, Ludrick, Capps, Rose, Shore and Carr have played their last game as Redskins. These young men are all hard workers and they deserve our praise. Looking back, it seems they came of age when they took on the undefeated , second ranked, Hugo Buffaloes in the finals of the Atoka tournament.
