This one was all Redskins, all night. Coach Taylor Weibner and his young team won their 11th straight game on Feb. 18. The Bulldogs go down, 55 to 31.

In the first quarter, someone must have mentioned it was senior night to Kaden Johnson, him being the only senior on the team. He put a “whippin” on the Bulldogs himself. He certainly came out looking for his shot. After hitting two three pointers and totaling 10 points, he was off to a great start. Dakota (Microwave)Weibner and Marshall Ludrick both added three pointers of their own. The score after one, 16 to 8.

The second quarter was no kinder to the Bulldogs. They managed only 5 points. Meanwhile, Johnson was back to work. He was getting open for three pointers, he had two, and he was pushing the ball up the court and attacking the basket. He had three field goals and was 2 to 3 from the line. Weibner also had a productive quarter with two more three pointers. Drew Capps added a bucket and that was all they needed for a 38 to 13 halftime lead.

With a 25 point lead, and Johnson sitting on 24 first half points of his own, Weibner went to a inside game with Brycen Ellisor. He had two field goals and a free throw. Jesse Rose was assisting on these low post cuts to the basket. He teamed up with Jase Hays and Capps who scored. Capps added a free throw. Weibner again added another three pointer. After three quarters, Redskins lead, 51 to 23.

Both teams went to the bench in the fourth quarter. Gage Gill and Ellisor both had buckets. Braden Matchen and Price Shore had playing time as well. Redskins win, 55 to 31.

Final stats: Despite not scoring in the second half, Johnson had 24 points. He was followed by Weibner with 12 and Ellisor with 7. Capps had 5 and Ludrick had 3, Hays and Gill both with 2 points each. From the free throw line the team was 5 of 7 for 71 %.

Girls

For The Madill Record

The Lady Redskins took on the Lady Bulldogs of Sulphur on Feb. 18 to close out the Lake Country Conference season. The girls from Sulphur came in to the game with a sparkling 19 and 3 record and a Class 4A ranking of 14th. What a game it was. After leading the entire game, and going to overtime, the Lady Redskins fall 64 to 61.

Coach Rumer went with a slightly different lineup tonight by having Tyla Bohannon, Avri Weeks, Dana Wagnon, Kassie Bailey and Britt Henderson take on a taller and athletic Lady Bulldog team. It seemed to be effective. Henderson came out firing hitting two three pointers and a two point bucket. Weeks hit two buckets down low, while Bailey was doing her thing - taking a charging foul, and twice she took fouls while bringing the ball up the court. She was two of two from the line. After one quarter, the Lady Redskins had a two point lead, 14 to 12.

In second quarter play, both teams settled into tough defensive play. Weeks again was hitting down low buckets; she had two. She was also getting to the line. She went 1 of 4. Bailey was also getting to the line, to the tune of 3 of 5. Wagnon was 2 of 2 from the line. Emi O’Steen had a nice three pointer. Lady Redskins were holding a 2 point lead, 28 to 26 going into the half.

Bailey added a three pointer to her total in the third quarter. Henderson had a bucket. Weeks continued to bang inside, she had a field goal and was 5 of 6 from the line. Bohannon hit from underneath. Wagnon spent extended time on the bench after getting her third foul . Pressley McKnight had a three pointer. The lead at the end of the quarter, 45 to 41.

Fourth quarter action had Bailey taking another charge in the lane. She was 1 of 2 from the line. Henderson hit a critical three pointer and was 1 of 2 from the line. Weeks was 0 for 2 from the line, and held without a field goal. Bohannon had a field goal. Wagnon now off the bench, got busy. She had a field goal and was 2 of 4 from the line. Coach Rumer called time out at 1:40 mark with a two point lead, 55 to 53. With the game tied at 56 with 27 seconds to play, neither team could score. So, off to overtime they went.

In o/t, the scoring was hard to come by. Henderson had another timely three pointer, and her back court mate Bailey had a field goal. That was all the scoring to be had and the Lady Redskins fell 64 to 61.

After the game, Coach Chad Rumer said “these last two games were the kind of games that will help us down the road”. When asked if he was referring to the playoffs, “Yes” he added. “Starting Friday we are all undefeated”. It has all been preparation up to this point.

Final stats: Henderson lead the team with 17 points, she was closely followed by Weeks who had 16. Bailey had a nice game with 12. Wagnon had 6, Bohannon 4 and O’Steen and McKnight both had 3. From the free throw line, 13 to 25 for 52%.
