One could possibly think of all sorts of clichés to label the contest between the Lady Redskins and the Lady Dragons of Purcell – “Defense wins championships” or “Games are won or lost at the free throw line.” Another one might be “sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.” Any or all of these might describe the game. No matter how the game is labeled, after all is said and done, the Ladies and Coach Chad Rumer move on to the Regional finals. Final score for the February 25, 2021 game with Purcell was 45 to 43.

In the first quarter, the team got off to a slow start, except for Ryan Herndon. She hit two three-pointers and it seemed like they were out of the gates. Avri Weeks was having one of those nights when the ball will just not cooperate. She had a field goal and a free throw. Kamry Bohannon had a bucket and was 2 of 2 from the line. This quarter is where Redskins fans are thankful for the defense these girls play on a nightly basis; Purcell could only manage only seven points. The score after one was 13 to 7.

The second quarter was no better for scoring. Herndon again was good for a three and a two-point field goal. Emi O’Steen and Weeks each had a bucket. Bohannon got to the line and was 2 of 2. The Lady Redskins led at the half time, 24 to 16.

Things got off to a bad start in the third. Bohannon and Herndon both went 0 for 2 from the line. O’Steen again had a three-pointer. Weeks had a field goal and was 3 of 4 from the line. As bad as the third quarter was, the Lady Redskins are still led by nine, 32 to 23, going into the fourth.

If somebody heard the Redskins only scored one field goal in the final quarter, they would assume it to be a bad thing. When O’Steen scores, it is usually well timed and this game was no different. And it was a three-pointer. That was the only field goal of the quarter.

After going 0 for 2 from the line in the previous quarter, Bohannon managed 6 of 8 in this quarter. Weeks and Herndon went 2 of 2 each. Purcell was making a run during all this. In fact, they banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to give them 20 points in the fourth. The Lady Redskins hold on and move on in the tournament by winning 45 to 43.

Box score: Herndon lead the team with 13 points, including three three-pointers. Weeks and Bohannon finished with 12 points each. O’Steen tallied eight with two three-pointers. As a team, from the line, 18 of 23 for 78%, and they needed every free throw. Purcell shot 60% from the line.
