Kingston teams fall in region finals, stay alive

After dominant showings at home in the opening round of Class 3A regional play on Thursday, the road wasn’t nearly as kind for Kingston basketball teams as each suffered losses in regional championship action at Lindsay.

The Lady Redskins blasted Marietta, 67-34, back in the friendly KMAC confines but then dropped a 39-26 verdict to fifth-rated Community Christian.

It was much the same story for the Kingston boys, which belted Frederick by a 73-44 count but ran into problems and number one ranked Oklahoma Christian School in a 67-51 defeat.

Both Kingston clubs will meet powerful Heritage Hall inAreaTournamentelimination matchups on Thursday in Ada. The girls tipoff at 1 p.m. with the boys to follow.

Girls

Kingstonracedtotheearly lead against Marietta and never looked back as Coach Chad Rumer’s squad utilized a 14-2 first quarter flurry in which all five starters contributed points. That burst resulted in a 22-9 scoring edge after one stanza.

The Redskins cashed in three straight Marietta turnovers for points in an 8-0 flurry in round two that ballooned the lead to as much as 20 points.

That was just an omen of things to come as Kingston turned up the defensive heat in the third frame, forcing 12 Lady Indian turnovers, turning seven of those into 14 points that included a 12-0 burst to end the quarter.

Avery Ludrick had a huge offensive night with 19 points to pace the Lady Redskin charge. Joley Heydon tossed in 12 while Jaci Herndon also reached double figures with 10.

Emily Bellettini had eight, Cassidy Walker pitched in seven, Olivia McAlister scored four, Coby Davis notched three with Jayda Foster and Madi Willis posting two apiece.

Points were definitely at a premium however against Community Christian as Kingston fell behind 18-7 after one quarter, 27-12 at halftime and 37-14 through three periods.

Belletini led the offense for the Lady Redskins with eight points as nobody reached double figures. Ludrick contributed seven, Herndon had five, Heydon notched three with Foster tallying two and Walker one point.

Boys

The Redskins turned on the offensive jets from the get go against Frederick, whether it was senior post Reid Cason dominating inside or sizzling three point shooting.

Cason scored eight of the first 11 points of the night to set the tone in spurring the hosts to a 20-5 cushion after one quarter. The post stalwart added a dunk sandwiched among a bevy of treys from Hayden Seeney and Hudson Everhart, which ignited a whopping 16-2 flurry that built the margin to a commanding 44-19 at intermission.

Brock Rumer drained a pair of three pointers to start the second half and Kingston continued to pull away over the final two periods. The Redskins tallied a total of 12 treys in the game.

Cason wrapped up the game with a team-high 23 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots. Seeney sank six of the three pointers on the way to 18 points while Rumer pumped in 12.

Ewan Weaver scored six points, Sam Walker had four, Everhart and Lander Burkhalter posted three apiece and Eli Oliger and Blane Henry both added two.

Oklahoma Christian put on an early blitz in Saturday’s regional title tilt, building a 29-14 lead at intermission and never looked back in the second half behind the one-twocombinationinsideof LukeGrayandCarsonJones.

Cason finished with 14 points, but Rumer was the only other double digit contributor with 10. Seeney sank three treys on the way to nine points, Everhart had seven, Walker posted six and Burkhalter ended with two.
