The Redskins
The Redskins battled the Indians on January 26, 2021. The best thing about the night was the ability to be put in the “win” column. After the game last Saturday with the undefeated Hugo Buffaloes, one might think that the Redskins confidence would be thru the roof. The junior varsity team won easily earlier in the afternoon. They looked really good for a win. Unfortunately, it did not carry over to the varsity. Even though it was a rough game, the Redskins won 42 to 35.
In first quarter action, the Redskins seemed to be missing something. That something was Jesse Rose. Rose was in street clothes and wearing a boot on one foot, resting a sore foot that swelled up during the Hugo game. Jesse brings intensity every game and his other teammates often feed off of that. The good news was that Braden Matchen was back from his nagging injury. Brady Brister got off to a good start. He had three baskets for 6 points. The problem: that was all the points made in the quarter. The Redskins trailed 10 to six.
The second quarter was better, at least scoring wise. The improvement came after Coach Taylor Weibner substituted the entire second team early in the game. They remained on the court most of the quarter. Matchen was good for a three and a two-point field goal and was 1 of 2 from the line. Tucker Rumer and Dakota Weibner each had three pointers. Reid Cason had a field goal and was 1 of 2 from the line. The Redskins had the lead at the half, 21 to 14.
The third quarter saw the turnover bug still plaguing the Redskins. However, Rumer and Weibner repeated what they had in the second with matching three pointers. Brister was 1 of 2 from the line. Jase Hays had a field goal and was 2 of 2 from the line. The score was 32 to 25 after three quarters.
Cason managed two field goals in the fourth. Those proved to be the only field goals the Redskins would get. The Redskins, however, would get to the free throw line. Marshall Ludrick was 0 for 2, Hays was 3 of 6, Cason was 1 of 2, and Brister was 2 of 2. That was a total of 6 of 14 for the team in the quarter. The final score was 42 to 35.
Box score: Brister had nine. Hays, Rumer and Cason all had seven points. Matchen and Weibner each had six points. As a team, they were 11 of 23 from the free throw line. Why was it so ugly? Brister did not have a field goal after the first quarter. Hays did not have a field goal until the third quarter and would not get another. Ludrick did not have a field goal, nor did Drew Capps who started in place of Rose. In fact, the starters had a total of five points on field goals in the second half. The second team had more field goals in the fourth.
