Kingston boys eliminated by Lindsay in close game

The Redskins were eliminated from the playoffs by the Lindsay Leopards on Friday night.

It went right down to the wire with the Leopards prevailing 31 to 28 on Feb.28. The Redskin cold shooting continued from the previous game with the Hugo Buffaloes. Both games they played well enough on defense, holding their opponents to 44 and 31 points, to win. The shots were just not falling.

In the first quarter, Dakota Weibner got the Redskins off to a good start with two three pointers.

Jase Hays and Drew Capps each had a field goal. Kaden Johnson was one of three from the line. The Redskins lead 9 to 7.

Second quarter action had Johnson hitting a three, Hays and Drew Capps both had field goals.

Jesse Rose was one of two from the line. The lead at the half was 17 to 15.

The third quarter had Weibner hitting his last three pointer of the night.

Hays and Capps both had field goals. The score now was 24 to 22.

Fourth quarter, skip ahead to 50.4 seconds to play and the Redskins leading 28 to 27. Rose was put on the line for a one and one free throw.

He missed the first, the Leopards rebounded the ball and called timeout with 31.6 seconds to go. Lindsay brought the ball up the court and were pressured around the perimeter by Hays and Johnson.

The Leopards found a crease and layed it in to take the lead at 29 to 28. With the clock running the Redskins inbounded quickly and called timeout with 6.3 seconds to go.

It was the first time the entire game that the Redskins trailed. Coming out of the timeout, Redskins inbound the ball and Kaden Johnson takes it the length of the court before losing control of it in the lane.

The Leopards snagged it and threw it the length of the court and layed it in at the buzzer. The Redskin season ends with a 31 to 28 loss.

Final stats: Dakota Weibner lead the team with 9 points. Kaden Johnson and Jase Hays followed with 6 points each. Drew Capps had 4 and Marshall Ludrick 2. Jesse Rose had 1 point. From the line the team went 4 of 15 for 27 %.

After the game, Coach Taylor Weibner had this to say, “I am really proud of the guys for the effort and toughness all year. I’m just disappointed that it didn’t end better. We just couldn’t hit shots when we needed to these last couple of games. Defensively we played pretty solid but offensively it was a struggle”.

Analysis: Going in to this season Coach Weibner knew this would be a challenging year. He did however look forward to it and was anxious to see just how far they could go. On occasion he commented that this season would be fun.

The past two seasons had been a bit stressful. Expectations were so high that anything less than a state championship would be viewed by many as a failure. To see where we were in late November and where we ended up tonight, the growth in this team has been amazing. Well done Coach.

The Kingston fans have enjoyed the play of Senior Kaden Johnson for the past two seasons.

As the only senior on the team your teammates looked to you for leadership. And you were a great leader. The coaches and the entire championship 2018-19 team commented to me last year how well you stepped up and played down the stretch. You really had the respect of your teammates, coaches, and fans. It’s been a pleasure to watch you play.
