The Kingston Lady Redskins faced the Tishomingo Lady Indians on February 2, 2021. Coach Rumer’s girls were sporting their “Hays Strong” shirts during warmup. It was in support of their assistant coach Jared Hays who is battling cancer and had surgery this week. Everybody said they look forward to his getting back to team. The girls used this as an opportunity to show him their support. It was a nice gesture in wishing him a speedy recovery.
This game was another outstanding effort by the Lady Redskins. The Lady Indians from Tishomingo went down pretty quickly. The game was not in question at all. Final score was 55 to 22.
Avri Weeks is making a habit of staking her claim to the “paint” early. She followed suit tonight. Every night, the opponents come in with a game plan to deny her the ball inside. This season, she is taking the ball out of the lane and then making her move to her spot. Sometimes from the high post position, sometimes it will be the base line. Her post moves are so good that she can split the double team and score. Most times, she is headed to the free throw line as well.
In the first quarter, the Lady Indians did not have the height or the athletic ability to stop Weeks. Here is the rundown: Weeks had two field goals, 3 of 4 from the line. Ryan Herndon added a bucket. The Lady Redskins led 9 to 5 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, everyone else was pitching in. Herndon hit two three-pointers. Weeks had two more field goals and went 4 of 5 from the line. Emi O’Steen had a bucket. Ethel Stewart came in and had two buckets. Kamry Bohannon was 1 of 2 from the line. That made a 19-point quarter and the lead going into the locker room was now 23 to 16.
It was the ball pressure and defense that took the game out of the Lady Indians’ hands. Quite a bit of turn overs. Again, Weeks takes control early in the third. This time, she had four field goals and was 1 of 2 from the line. Herndon, Raegan Davis, Kiara Price all had field goals. Stewart added a free throw. The lead had swelled to 44 to 18.
In the fourth quarter, Weeks had a field goal and was 1 of 2 from the line. With four and a half minutes to play, the second squad took over and finished the game. Herndon was 2 of 2 from the line. O’Steen, Kaya Weibner and Jayda Foster all had field goals. The final score was 55 to 22.
Box score: Weeks led the way with 25 points, 9 of 12 from the free throw line. Next up was Herndon with 12 points, she was 2 of 2 from the free throw line. Stewart had five points, 1 of 3 from the line. O’Steen had four points, Weibner, Davis, Foster and Price all had two points. Bohannon was 1 of 2 from the line.
Next up for the Lady Redskins will be the Lady Bulldogs of Sulphur. The game will be at Sulphur Friday night. After tonight’s win, the Ladies are now 12 and 4 and ranked # 8 in class 3A. The girls from Sulphur are unranked in class 4A. In a game earlier this season, the Lady Redskins fell to them by four points.
In a late schedule change, the trip to Vanoss on Saturday was canceled. With a 20 and 0, record they will end the season early and avoid any more covid 19 exposure. However taking their place, Roff has agreed to come to the KMAC on Saturday. They have a sparkling 15 and 4 record and they are ranked 13 th in their class. With many games being canceled this season the OSSAA is allowing teams to schedule whomever they can to fill out their schedule.
A word to the loyal Lady Redskins fans: The KHS administration is well aware of the challenges that students and their fans have faced this past year. However, everyone has been surprised to see visiting fans come to the KMAC in greater numbers than the home team has. These kids and their coaches have worked as hard as ever and plus have had the added stress of Covid-19. If at all possible lets get behind the Lady Redskin and Redskins for the remainder of the season.
