Miguel Duran, a senior at Madill High School, is the son of Misael and Maria Duran. He and his four siblings have all grown up in and attended school in Madill, Okla. He is an exceptional athlete and is involved in basketball and runs with the track and crosscountry team.
He has scored over 1000 points for his career and will go down as one of the best all time scorers in the history of Madill Basketball. He averages 18.2 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game. Miguel was also the 2018 cross country state champ and was a member of the 2019 state runner-up team in the 4x8 relay.
Even though he has a hard time deciding which sport he will miss the most once he graduates, he said basketball is probably the sport he chooses.
“Basketball, probably,” he said. “It’s a sport where you can play with your teammates and you have to trust in them when it comes down to it. I’m going to miss my friends, coaches, ballgames, and races.”
Coach Weiberg shared his appreciation for Miguel.
“I am so grateful for Miguel because he is so coachable,” said Weiberg. “When your best player is coachable and has the attitude he does, it makes my job so much easier.”
Being a great athlete like Miguel consists of many traits such as passion, determination, confidence, and being strong minded.
“He leads by example and never has a bad day,” Weiberg noted. “He is a mentally tough kid that treats everyone with respect, and I am lucky to have been able to coach him for three years. I love Miguel and so does every one of his teammates.”
When he graduates in May 2021, Miguel said he plans to attend college. “Probably OSUIT in Okmulgee, OK.” He shared how much he was looking forward to college and in hopes of making a good living. He continued with how he was thankful for his coaches – Coach E, Coach Weiberg, Coach Potter, and Coach Anderson. “Thank you for pushing me and being there for me and making me a stronger person in life!”
It goes without saying that he will be deeply missed by his coaches and fellow teammates who think very highly of him and his accomplishments. He has shown so much heart, enthusiasm, determination, respect, and great sportsmanship. Miguel is defiantly considered a great role model, not just for younger athletes but by his very own peers.
