Unfortunately, the February 28, 2021 meeting with Community Christian was unavoidable for Kingston. In the final OSSSA poll, they were the fourth ranked team in Class 3A with a 20 and 5 record. Once the players took to the court, the concern was apparent. They are good; very good. What makes them good? They are tall, fast, and they can shoot. The Redskins fell short in this one with the final score of 67 to 44.

In the first quarter, the Redskins quickly found out what all the hype about this team was. They hardly missed and their defense was smothering. Jase Hays had a three-point and a two-point field goal. He was 1 of 2 from the line. Dakota Wiebener had a three-pointer. Even after all that, the score was 21 to 9 after the first quarter.

The second quarter scoring was better. Brady Brister had a three-pointer. Reid Cason had a bucket and a free throw. Drew Capps and Braden Matchen both had field goals. Wiebener was fouled on a three-point attempt and he hit them all, 3 for 3. At the half, the score stood at 41 to 22.

In the third, Wiebener, again had a three-pointer. Cason had two buckets inside and Hayes was good for a bucket and a free throw. Brister and Matchen each had field goals. After three quarters, the score was 52 to 36.

The fourth quarter proved to be no better for the Redskins. Brister had two buckets and Hays had two free throws. The bench took over late. No matter how hard the Redskins played, they could not decrease the point deficit, and the final score was 67 to 44.

Box score: Hays had 11. Brister and Wiebener both with nine, Cason had seven, Matchen with four, Capps and Ludrick each with two. As a team, 8 of 13, from the line for 62 %.

The Redskins have now played two of the top five teams in Class 3A. Earlier in the season, in the Atoka Tournament, they met the Hugo Buffaloes in the finals. They lost by five, 47 to 42. The good news is they still advance to the Area Tournament. However, they are now in the loser’s bracket leaving no room for error. They will next play Jones at 8:00 pm, March 4 at Ada High School.

What is known about Jones? They were unranked in the final poll. However, this is misleading. At this point in the playoffs every team is dangerous. Good news for the fans and followers of Redskins basketball, the Area tournament now moves to Ada where historically they have done well. Good luck Coach Wiebener and the Redskins.
