A two-day manhunt ended after a high-speed pursuit and a shooting. The incident began on October 27 when Shawn Baumgardner escaped from the Johnston County Jail. Just a mere 24 hours before he was due in front of the judge to receive his sentence for three convictions: First-Degree Murder, Causing Bodily Injury while Eluding and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle.
Johnston and Marshall Counties worked in concert to track down leads and bring Baumgardner in. Marshall County Sheriff Donald Yow stated that they received a credible tip from “a good citizen” on October 29, 2021.
Baumgardner was spotted in Enos, and when authorities arrived on scene, Baumgardner allegedly decided to add more felonies to his record. He ran from law enforcement in a stolen vehicle and attempted to ram cars head on, including law enforcement’s vehicles.
During the pursuit, shots were fired, and Baumgardner was hit. The pursuit ended and the suspect was taken to the hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.
He was taken back to the Johnston County Jail to get sentenced for his convictions and answer to the new charges. Yow stated that this is an ongoing investigation and charges are expected to be filed on the individuals who assisted Baumgardner and harbored him.
The three convictions stem from an incident that occurred in late October 2020. Baumgardner was eluding Durant Police Department after he took off from a traffic stop. The pursuit continued Johnston County where he crashed into David and Verna Trammell. The crash killed 71-year-old David and seriously injured Verna.
