The City of Madill passed a new ordinance regarding the use of utility vehicles, golf carts and side-by-sides. On October 12, 2021, the city unanimously voted to pass the new City Ordinance 966.
This ordinance allows utility vehicles, side-by-sides, and golf carts to be driven on the streets within Madill City limits, except US High way 70, US377 and US177. All vehicles must meet all requirements of a motor vehicle. This includes proper tag and registration, seat belts, turn signals, horn, tail and stop lights, headlights, windshield, and proof of valid insurance. Operators of said vehicles
Operators of said vehicles are required to possess a valid driver’s license.
This decision was based on Oklahoma Statutes, Title 47, Section 11-1116. “Streetlegal utility vehicles that are registered as a motor vehicle pursuant to subsection B of Section 1 of this act may be operated on the streets and highways of this state. Provided, however, street-legal utility vehicles shall not be operated on the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways or U.S. highways.”
Many residents and people took to Facebook to vent their frustration and confusion. One person posted, “I am literally never coming back to GTA: Marshall County. Y’all are crazy.”
One resident questioned how one would drive through town without having access to one of the prohibited highways.
“So dumb question…it says you can’t get on hwy 70, wo are we considering 1st street/hwy 70 when it comes through town a hwy or a city street??? Pretty much have to get on that street/cross that street when going most places in town.”
