Charley Rember, a 51-year-old male from Madill, is facing charges for Embezzlement and Eluding. On July 16, 2021, Marshall County Sheriff Donald Yow received and assistance call from Madill Police Captain Christopher Smith.
Smith had been assisting a federal investigator on possible embezzlement charges for Rember and had filed for a warrant. After the warrants were issued, Smith requested assistance from Yow to assist in the apprehension of Rember.
Yow, along with Smith and the federal investigator, arrived at the suspect’s residence on School Road. The sheriff noted that the blue Ford truck that Rember is known for driving was absent from the driveway.
Smith and the investigator returned to Madill to speak with the suspect’s wife. Smith then called Yow and informed him that Rember was returning from Durant and should be driving through town soon.
Yow set up at Highway 199 and Cumberland Road and watched for the blue truck. Not long after parking, Yow noticed a blue Ford truck approaching the intersection. Yow identified the driver as Rember as the driver.
The sheriff then pulled out of his spot and fell in behind the pickup. As soon as Yow was behind Rember, the suspect began to speed; 70 in a 45 mile-an-hour zone.
Yow then activated his emergency lights, signaling for Rember to pull over. Yet, the suspect did not perform the action one would expect when a law official initiates his emergency lights. He did not pull over.
According to Yow’s report, Rember slowed a few times as if he was going to pull over but continued to attempt to evade the sheriff. Yow noted that the suspect even put his hand out the driver window and waved to the sheriff but did not stop.
Rember slowed down to turn on School Road but wound up pulling out in front of an oncoming vehicle to turn in front of it. This forced the other driver to come to a sudden stop.
Rember then traveled the half of a block to his residence and parked in his driveway. Yow exited his unit and gave Rember verbal commands to stop. The suspect obeyed and was arrested without any incident.
So, on top of the Embezzlement charges, Rember added Eluding to his name.
Allegedly, Rember eluded the sheriff because he wanted to “avoid his blue Ford truck being impounded.”
Rember is facing nine counts of Embezzlement. He is accused of embezzling over $15,000 in federal funding from the low-income properties that he is a manager over. The allocations claim that he requested money from HUD for building improvements and upkeep. However, the housing authority never saw that money.
