Madill gets Fishing Club for outdoor lovers

High School fishing is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country. With Lake Texoma in our backyard, it only makes sense that Madill should become a part of this popular sport.

The Madill High School Fishing Club is associated with Oklahoma Bass Nation and Bassmaster (BASS). Seasons usually start in the fall and go through the next spring and summer.

With the support of the school and a volunteer faculty person, parent leaders have been able to bring this chance to Madill. At this time, twenty-one students are participating.

The club seeks to provide an alternative to traditional sports for students who have interests in fishing or conservation, or who just want to learn more or have an extracurricular activity. Planned activities for the group include fishing events and tournaments, as well as conservation projects.

Sponsors from the community have donated generously to get the club off the ground, though the first year has been slow in part due to COVID. Sponsors and members are hopeful for more activities in the future. Thus far, members have been able to complete the OHP Lake Patrol boater safety course with Trooper Jason Hall.

Two Madill students are representing the team on Keystone Lake on April 10, 2021. A local fundraiser tournament is also being held on May 8 at willow springs.

Many tournaments bring opportunities for advancement onto national level events and may include cash or other prizes. The club’s funds will be used to help pay entry fees for tournaments, offset student costs and other activities.

A parent committee will oversee funds and determine other fundraisers as well as other uses of club money. Partnerships are being established with the SOSU fishing club.

Cost to join the club is $35 which covers state and national memberships. However, hardships will be considered and no students should avoid joining based on inability to pay.

Parental support is needed and encouraged.
