The Madill High School girls golf team headed to the Tishomingo course on Tuesday, March 23. Even though Jennifer Rushing is in her first year as head coach, she has assisted in golf for the past six years. She said she is not expecting to go into her first year easy.
“This year our expectation is to get better every tournament,” said Rushing.
The girls play 18 holes and the goal is to have the lowest score at the end. The score is based off how many times a player hits the ball. During the tournament, sophomore Kellanie Lowe scored 112; Junior Belen Moreno played a 118; sophomore Abby Zang had 123. Rushing said the team has two new additions to it.
“We have three experienced players Belen, Kellanie and Abby,” Rushing said. “Jaelen and Samantha are new to the program.”
Sophomore Samantha Salinas made 141 and freshman Jaelen Williams had 138 points. The team’s total was 491 points. The team will travel to Pauls Valley on April 2.
The Madill boys golf team is coached by Adam Potter who is in his fourth year of coaching golf. Potter said only two members of the team have experience.
“We have one senior and one junior,” Potter said. “After that, we have several young golfers this year.”
Senior Ian Zang led the team at the Tishomingo course with a score of 98. Junior Ezekiel Fuentes was one point behind Zang, with a 99. Potter said he is still trying to figure out a direct course of action.
“I haven’t found out what a good score for us would be just yet,” Potter said. “The bright side is with young golfers getting to compete early, they have a good chance to improve quickly.”
Freshmen Greg Padgett had 98 points; Brylan James with 107; Reagan Combs with 123. The team had a total of 402 points.
“My expectations for the season would be to improve each player by at least 10 strokes and have a chance to qualify for state, said Potter.
