Coach Taylor Weibner and the Redskins needed to make a habit of putting good consecutive games together, and that was exactly what they did Saturday against Comanche. The final score for the February 13, 2021 game was 59 to 41.
The first quarter had each team trading baskets. The defensive effort was high on both teams, as well. The Redskins scoring was spread out between five players. Dakota Wiebener had a three and was 1 of 2 from the line. Brady Brister, Braden Matchen, and Tucker Rumer all had field goals. Jase Hays was 1 of 2 from the line. The Redskin held the advantage, 11 to 10, at the horn.
In the second quarter, the Redskins kept the defensive pressure on and only allowed eight points total to Comanche. Meanwhile, the offense was clicking. Seven Redskins scored in the quarter. Brister had five, Matchen had four, and Wiebener had another three-pointer. Reid Cason had a bucket, as did Hays and Jesse Rose. Rumer had a bucket and a free throw. Going into the locker room, the Redskins were leading now, 32 to 18.
Reid Cason and Marshall Ludrick both came alive in the third. They each had two field goals. Hays and Matchen each had field goals and were both 0 of 2 from the line. The Redskins were in control, 44 to 31.
Early in the fourth quarter, Brister deflected a pass right to Hays. Out quickly on the turnover was Cason. Hays lobbed the ball over the defenders that were chasing Cason. It seemed he only had to dribble once and went high above the rim and dunked it. The home fans and his coaches celebrated.
His teammates encouraged him all season to do this. It was a nice moment for everyone, except probably Comanche fans who thought they were having a Jacob Germany flash back to 2016. Matchen continued his good night – he had three more buckets. Brister had two more field goals, as well. Hays had a bucket and a free throw. Final score was 59 to 41.
Box score: Matchen lead the team with 14 points, Brister was right behind him with 11. Reid and Hays had eight points each. Hays was 2 of 5 from the line. Wiebener had seven points on two threes and a free throw. Rumer had five points, Ludrick had four and Rose had two. From the free throw line, the team was 4 of 10 for 40%.
Back to the fourth quarter dunk.Coach Wiebener has done something interesting with the defense. He was picking up the Indians at half court and he had Cason in the middle on the ball handler. A six-foot six-inch freshman on a half court press covering the ball handler. Here is the method to the coach’s madness. Reid can move his feet. He has a wingspan approaching seven feet. He is very hard to pass around. This is what lead to the pass deflection from Brister to Hays. Cason was already at center court. Hays nicely lobbed the ball over the chasing defenders right to Cason. The results were a monstrous dunk. Nicely done young men and Coach Wiebener.
