On February 5, 2021, the Redskins battled the Bulldogs. All kinds of sayings come to mind in describing this game. Like, “it wasn’t pretty, “sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good”. That is because it was not pretty and with a 44 to 42, overtime win, from a road game, many felt lucky to go home with the win. Some may recall the three-overtime game with Broken Bow a few weeks back. That one did not turn out so well. However, this one ended in Kingston’s favor.
During the game, Coach Taylor Weibner tinkered with the lineup. Six foot six inch freshman Reid Cason made his first varsity start. Jesse Rose who has missed a few games while resting nagging injuries was back tonight. He came off the bench tonight and looked to be moving well.
In the first quarter action, both teams were playing hardnosed defense. It was physical play on both ends. Tucker Rumer and Dakota Weibner had three-pointers and Cason had a bucket. The score at the break had the Redskins trailing by one, 8 to 7.
In the second, Marshall Ludrick had a three pointer, and Brady Brister added two field goals. Cason had two goals of his own and added a free throw. The deficit was gone and the Redskins now led, 22 to 17.
The third quarter proved to be rough for the ones trying to score. Jase Hays and Cole Morgan each had a bucket and that was it for the Redskins. The lead was now down to 2 points, 26 to 24. As long as a team has a good defense, they can keep themselves in a game such as this one.
Fourth quarter action featured a dunk by Brister at the 1:56 mark that seemed to give life to his team. That pulled the Redskins back to within one at 34 to 33. He also pitched in a three-pointer and was 2 of 3 from the line. Hays had one inside bucket and 3 of 4 from the line. Tie game, 37 all, and then they headed into overtime.
In the overtime period, Brister again hit a three to bring the team back to within one, 42 to 41. Cason and Rumer both got to the line and were 1 of 2. Hays hits a runner for a bucket with 1.2 seconds left to give the Redskins the lead at 43 to 42. Rumer hits a free throw and the final score was 44 to 42. The Redskins escaped with the win.
Box Score: Brister with 13. Hays had nine Cason had eight, Rumer had six, Ludrick and Weibner both had three, and Morgan had two. As a team, from the free throw line, 10 of 15 for 73 %. Cason had four blocked shots.
