Calvin Beames, Jr.

Calvin Greenwood Beames Jr., 90, of Kingston, Okla. passed away Thursday, January 14, 2021 at the Integris Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla. with his daughters by his side. He was born on October 29, 1930 in Kingston, Okla. to the late Calvin Greenwood Beames and Grace Loree Chesnut Beames. He grew up in Kingston, Okla. and Santa Fe N.M.

After high school, Calvin enlisted in the Oklahoma Guard as part of the 45th Infantry Division in Tishomingo, Okla. where he served in the Korean War with distinction.

Upon his he attended the University of Oklahoma where he obtained his Ph.D. After completion of his Ph.D., he was pleased to accept a position at Oklahoma State University in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology.

He raised three children in Stillwater who enjoyed attending numerous school and university activities alongside their father. He dedicated his entire career to research and education holding various positions throughout his tenure, ultimately retiring from the university in 1990.

Following his retirement from the university, Calvin returned to his Hereford cattle ranch in Kingston, Okla. He often quipped that he was busier in retirement than while “working.” Calvin led an especially active life in retirement; he owned and operated the Dark Corner General Store for 14 years, he enjoyed attending all of the activities participated in by his two youngest daughters and he was immensely involved in the community.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, served on the Kingston School Board, including a term as president, active in the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce, City Council, Masonic Lodge, and CASA.

Calvin spent his final days “fixin’ fence” and “poking cows” with his son-in-law, Ivan Bray.

He is survived by his younger sister Sammy Townsend and husband Leroy of Sedona, Ariz., five children; Deborah Puckette and husband Tom of Poteau, Okla., Calvin G. Beames III and wife Dorothy of Ardmore, Okla., Rebecca Bray and husband Ivan of Ardmore, Okla., Tisha Meek and husband Justin of Edmond, Okla., and Jessica McCool and husband Gary of Edmond, Okla., and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Calvin Beames and Loree Beames.

A celebration of life will be Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Watts Funeral Home in Kingston, Okla. Interment will be at the Kingston Cemetery in Kingston, Okla. following the service.
