Lady Redskins storm past Lady Longhorns

With the season winding down the Lady Redskins and Coach Chad Rumer played host to the Lady Longhorns of Lone Grove on Tuesday night at the KMAC. Two games next week and the 2020 Lake Country Conference season will all be in the books. This one was a miss match from the get go. Kingston girls have won 10 of their last 12 games. Lone Grove has lost 5 games in a row. The Lady Redskins get a 68 to 27 victory.

In the first quarter the Redskins won the opening tip and went on offense. The ball was passed in to Avri Weeks who was instantly double teamed, she passed out to a wide open Pressley McKnight who smoothly knocked down her first three point goal of the night. Seen this before? To take advantage of the Weeks, Tyla Bohannon, Dana Wagnon inside game the guards McKnight, Kasie Bailey and Britt Henderson need to hit those kinds of shots. The full court “Rumer” press was on and turnovers allowed Dana Wagnon a layup on the other end. Turnovers again and Weeks gets an easy layup. McKnight gets another field goal on a drive down the baseline. Bohannon in relief of Weeks hits a soft jumper from the free throw line. Lady Redskins leading 11 to 2 with 3:50 left in the quarter. The Horns need a time out. Play continued with Henderson hitting a pretty three point shot. After a steal by Kamry Bohannon and a nice back door pass from Bohannon (T) and lay up by Weeks cutting underneath, the score stood at 16 to 4 with 1:23 to play in the half. Bohannon (T)again followed up with a rebound and basket off a missed free throw attempt by Weeks. The lead at the end of the first was extended to 19 to 6.

Second quarter play saw Weeks immediately go to work inside with a catch and shoot bucket. Lone Grove cut the lead to 21 to 10 but Henderson hit a nice jumper just inside the three point circle. Wagnon added a bucket on a drive. McKnight again hit a pretty three that barely moved the cords. After a Bailey steal and pass, Wagnon scores again on a layup. Lone Grove needs another time out. Score now at 30 to 12. Coming out of the time out , after a steal and run out, Henderson gets another layup. Weeks picks up two more baskets with girls all over her. Wagnon scores on a great pass from Bohannon (K). Ryan Herndon hit a three pointer at the buzzer. Everything was going the Lady Redskin way. A 23 point effort brought the score to 42 to 15.

The half time entertainment was by the KHS cheerleaders and about a hundred elementary cheerleaders.

The third quarter action saw a high post to low post play ran to perfection by Weeks to Wagnon. Wagnon immediately returned the favor and Weeks was fouled. After the inbounds play Weeks hit again on a drive underneath. Bailey again had a steal leading to a run out layup by McKnight. The score now was 49 to 18. McKnight was locked in on this night. She again hits a baseline three pointer. After a missed free throw by Bailey, Wagnon just muscled her way to a rebound and put back for two. The score now 54 to 18.

Starting the fourth quarter with a 34 point lead, Weeks goes 1 of 2 from the line. On the other end Bailey has her third steal of the night. After a steal by Weeks, and ensuing foul on a layup by McKnight , she hits both shots. Weeks find pay dirt twice more underneath. At 3:05 the benches empty. Lainey French had a nice steal, brought the ball up the court and found Ethel Stewart underneath for a basket. Brittany O’Steen had a field goal on a pass from French. French followed that up with a three pointer to close out the scoring. Lady Redskins win, 68 to 27.

Asked for his thought after the game, Coach Rumer said, “I thought we came out really good on defense. Our defense usually creates our offense, which was the case tonight. I’m proud of the girls for all their hard work”. The team now travels to Comanche on Friday the 14 th . They will return home on Tuesday the 18 th to face Sulphur.

Final stats: Weeks leads the team with 19 points. She was 3 of 8 from the free throw line. Next was McKnight with 15. She scored in every quarter and was 2 of 2 from the line. Wagnon finished with 12 points. Henderson had seven, Herndon had a 3 and a free throw for 4 followed by Bohannon (T) who had 4. French had a 3 and Ethel Stewart and Brittany O’Steen also scored field goals. Despite not scoring Bailey was terrific on defense with three steals that lead to baskets.
