Then & Now: Spanking and discipline

Parenting now is so different than when I was a child in the 1950's. My parents never counted to three to get me and my brother to do something.

We knew to do it immediately or there were consequences. Children today know that they have to the number three, so they don't bother to do what is expected the first time.

Today, there is time out. The child is asked 'Do you want time out?' Of course, they don't.

There was time out in the 50's that dad took time out from the swats or the belt to rest a minute. Discipling at that time was tiring, but very rewarding. My dad was fair, though.

Once he asked me 'Who spanks harder, me or your mother.' I stupidly said, 'mother does, because she has long boney fingers.'

Wrong answer, because he told me from now on mother could do the spanking.
