Carter was well-known for being a peanut farmer before becoming a politician. He supported the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia as a state senator, and later as Governor of Georgia.

He stayed busy during his presidency by establishing the US Departments of Energy and Education. Even though Carter defeated Ted Kennedy in the 1980 Democratic primaries, he ultimately lost the general election to Republican Ronald Reagan.
In 1982, Carter founded the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization to advance human rights and alleviate human suffering.
Carter continued working on his political connections even after his presidency. He attended the dedication of his presidential library, and those of Presidents Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
Carter was also a huge advocate for Habitat for Humanity, a program that helps people get affordable housing.
