Lights, camera, action! An Oscar worthy event

CASA of Southern Oklahoma honored its volunteers with a dinner on September 25. The gala has the elegance and flair of an Oscar Awards ceremony.

With the red carpet rolled out and photographers positioned, volunteers were seated for an extraordinary meal shared with their peers, eager to watch the celebrations. In addition to the volunteers, there were numerouscommunitygroups with whom the volunteers interact with daily to facilitate a supportive environment that reduces trauma and promotes child well-being.

For those unfamiliar, CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. This role demands an exceptional individual, distinguished by compassion, resolve and a willingness to selflessly dedicate time to children navigating the court system without representation.

CASA serves as the eyes and ears for these vulnerable children. The CASA organization is comprised of coordinators, board members, public figures and executive director Amy Martens. They unite as a familial force driving positive change in the lives of children unjustly removed from their homes.

Martens highlighted the program’s impact and noted the importance of the organization.

“It converts a child from a case file into a recognized individual,” Martens said.

Connie Grant, CASA Advocate Supervisor, shared some of her favorite moments with the guests. She said they arewhenachildlightsupand runs to hug their advocate when they see them.

According to the latest data collected through September 1, 2024, there were 251 abused and neglected children in state’s custody across Carter, Johnston, Marshall, Murray and Love counties. CASA of Southern Oklahoma reported that its 41 volunteers devoted 1,844 hours to advocating for 89 of these children.

The purpose of the dinner was to honor the volunteers’ sustainedcommitmenttothe organization and recognize their efforts.
