Researchers from the National University of Laos and the Zoological Research Institute of China recently discovered a new species of lizard in the central province ofKhammouaninLaoswhich is about 260 miles southeast of Vientiane. The Laodracon carsticola or the Khammouane karst dragon was first spotted in August 2022 bySantiXayyasith, alecturer of environmental sciences with the National University of Laos. Xayyasith, whose research is in aviary and not reptiles, was out birding when he first snapped photos of a very camouflage lizard. Even though his specialty is birds, he said he is proud of his discovery.
“This discovery is very meaningful to me,” he said.
According to a study published earlier this month; the team of researchers found that this very unusual creature had unique DNA and physical features classifying it as part of a new genus, Laodracon, or the Laos karst dragon. Named for the specific habitat that the lizards dwell in. “Carsticola'' is a combination of the German word for limestone, “karst,” and the Latin word for resident, “cola,” according to the study.
Limestone karsts are sedimentary rock outcrops made of calcium carbonate. This medium-sized reptile is about one foot long, has a triangular head, unique scale pattern, long and slender appendages and bluish-gray eyes. Its body is black with white bands on its back and speckles of white on its head and limbs.
Its belly and a spot under its throat is tinged blue. They are only found in this one karst formation in the Khammouane Province and are most active in the afternoon. Due to the scale pattern and the color of the body, the Laodracon blendsin perfectly with the limestone making it hard to find.
The discovery of this new species of reptiles leaves the door open to other new species of animals that could yet to be found in this particular area. Xavyasith said he is hopeful for new discoveries.
“I think several species will be discovered soon by other scientists in Laos,” said Xayyasith.
