Tragedy strikes twice in weekend

Marshall County and the surrounding area experienced two tragedies over the weekend.

Eva Backenstoes, a 35-year-old female from Kingston, was tragically killed on June 17. The wreck happened at approximately 2 p.m. on S. Lone Oak Road and the Caddo Hwy intersection, approximately three miles north of Durant, Okla. in Bryan County.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Backenstoes was crossing the railroad crossing, and was hit by a train. The OHP said that railroad crossing was unguarded. That means there were no railroad arms or lights to warn drivers.

Many of Backenstoes' friends and family took to Facebook to send condolences to the family members who now have a hole in their hearts and lives. One friend mentioned all the outpouring of love and said it was a testament of just how awesome of a person she was.

'I can't say what hasn't already been said,' Erica Baur said. 'She's an amazing mother, the best friend anyone could ever hope for. A courageous, headstrong, beast of a human being that fought hard and loved even harder.'

Also on June 17, a man from Yukon, Okla. drowned at Lake Murray. Sam Callison, a 39-year-old male was on a raft with two juveniles and one adult female. Another juvenile was holding on to a rope tied to the raft, The raft became untethered and the juvenile began to struggle.

Callison jumped in the water to assist and also began to struggle. The adult female retrieved the juvenile, but lost sight of Callison. He was recovered the next day 85 yards south of North Shore of Cedar Cove.
