Madill Mayor Travis Williams recently declared the week of February 17 to be known as Random Acts of Kindness week in coordination with the National Random Act of Kindness initiative.
N.R.A.K. week is a nationwide endeavor to encourage people to put kindness first. Originating in 1995 out of Denver, Color., the message spread to New Zealand by 2004. Each year since 1995, the week of February 17 has been celebrated by individuals, businesses, groups, and communities to promote kindness around the world.
During the February City Council meeting, Williams made a proclamation to recognize the day as a city-wide event to be celebrated each year going forth. The proclamation read as follows, “Whereas the city of Madill recognizes the value of random acts of kindness that are performed without prompting or reason and how these acts of kindness impact the person performing the act of kindness, the person receiving the acts of kindness, and those witnessing. And whereas acts of kindness can be performed by any person in the city of Madill, regardless of age, origin, education, gender, religious beliefs, lifestyle, or abilities for the good of those around them.”
“And whereas kind individuals can create a more caring community and help to perpetuate genuine acts of kindness within their city, state, and even throughout the world. “
“And whereas we seek to cultivate thoughtful and compassionate residents by teaching our youth to make a difference through random acts of kindness. And whereas Random Acts of Kindness week is recognized as a national celebration intended to encourage all of us to practice random acts of kindness in our homes, schools, businesses, and communities.”
“Now therefore be it resolved Travis Williams, mayor of Madill, does hereby proclaim February 11, 2024, through February 17, 2024, as city of Madill Random Acts of Kindness week.”
The city council approved proclamation will be celebrated each year, with city wide events of recognizing those in the community who are showing acts of kindness all year long. Williams noted that even though the proclamation was made, they won’t act on it till a later date.
“We don’t have anything planned this year, but we intend to do something next year to recognize the people in the city of Madill for the kindness that they show,” Williams said.
