Coach Chad Rumer and the Lady Redskins took on the Valliant Lady Bulldogs in the Winners Bracket of the Class 3A Regional. Thanks to an 18 and 5 record and being the District champions, the Lady Redskins took advantage of the home advantage during the February 23 game. The Lady Redskins won 58 to 30 and advanced to the regional finals.
The Lady Bulldogs controlled the tip and that was just about the last time anything went their way. Before the Valliant coach could get a timeout, they trailed 7 to 0. That was after 1:35 seconds. He needed another at the 3:01 mark and it was 17 to 2.
How it got there, Laney French opened with a three-point barrage, she had two. Olivia Quapaw had one of her own, hers was at the buzzer. Kaya “Quick Draw” Wiebener hit a nice three.
Kamry Bohannon had two big steals and turned them both into baskets. She added another basket and she was 1 of 2 from the line. Emily Bellettini was off to a good start, as well. She had two buckets. The defense was mostly responsible for the 23 to 9 lead.
The second quarter was more of the same. French again was on fire with two three pointers. Quapaw penetrated the lane for a field goal. Bohannon had two more buckets. Bellettini had three points via a field goal and a free throw. Jaci Herndon got in on the scoring with a bucket. The Lady Redskins were up by 28 at the half - 40 to 12.
In the third, Bohannon showed no sign of letting up. She had two buckets and a free throw. Bellettini had a bucket and was 3 of 3 from the line. Quapaw had a bucket underneath that she flipped over her shoulder without looking, and banked it in. Valliant had seen enough and went to the bench midway through the third and down by 30 points. It was 51 to 21 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth, Wiebener added another three pointer. Emily Backenstoes, Tabiatha Arnold, Kelsie Cook, Maddi Willis, Brooklyn Claborn, and Kandice Felton all played. Claborn and Felton each had a bucket. The final score was 58 to 30.
Box score: Bohannon lead the way with 15 points. Next, French and Bellettini, each had 12. Quapaw had seven, Wiebener six, Herndon, Claborn and Felton all with two points each. The starters did not play the fourth quarter. The defense was spot on again, they did not allow double figures in any quarter.
The now 18 and 5, Lady Redskins, are on to the regional finals on Saturday night. This is not unfamiliar territory for them. These seniors have been
