To be idle from the middle of March, 2019 until the next calendar year is a long time. Just ask junior Avri Weeks. The layoff was due to the knee surgery following last year’s state tournament loss. A game they were leading in the 3rd quarter. No one was happier than the Redskin faithful and they gave a nice ovation when she entered the game at the 3:45 mark in the first quarter. According to sources close to the family, she was very nervous before the game. We can just imagine. Congratulations to her.

The first quarter started with great effort and hustle. The scoring was spread out over the team. The senior back court of Britt Henderson and Kassie Bailey, and the front court of Tyla Bohannon and Dana Wagnon were setting the tempo with ball hawking defense and causing turnovers. Henderson, and Wagnon both had four points. Ryan Herndon hit a pretty three point shot. Bailey had a bucket and set the tone on defense with another of her “offensive foul taken” trademarks. The presence of Weeks was felt the moment she entered the game. Two buckets underneath and several rebounds later the Lady Redskins had a 18 to 8 lead at the end of one.

In the second quarter, Bailey found her spot and holds her ground for another “offensive foul” taken. She was well on her way to another stellar nights work. More on that later. Henderson continued shooting the ball well and had a three and a field goal. Again Weeks came in off the bench, and has an immediate impact on the game. She added 2 field goals and a free throw. This was all the scoring in the quarter, the ladies held an 8 point lead at the half, 28 to 20.

In third quarter action, the pace continued to favor the Lady Redskins. Henderson continued her nice game with two more field goals followed by Bohannon and Weeks with a field goal each. Emi O’Steen was 2 of 2 from the line. The Lady Wampus Cats of Coach Wesley Burnett were not going away and were only down by 8, 38 to 31.

Bailey made sure in the fourth quarter that this game was going in the win column. The threes started coming so she kept hitting them. She had four in the quarter and was a perfect 2 of 2 from the line. That’s a 14 point quarter and Coach Chad Rumer was encouraging her on. She outscored the visiting team by herself. Wagnon had a field goal and a free throw. Weeks was 1 of 2 from the line and Bohannon was 1 of 2 herself. This all adds up to a 57 to 41 win.

After the game, Coach Rumer was pretty pleased with the overall effort. “I have started seeing this coming around in practice” he reported, of course, speaking of the shooting. When asked how important it was to get Avri Weeks some playing time, he stated “It was nice to get the first game back thing behind her”. Overall it was a good warm up for the coming New Years Classic starting on Thursday with a matchup with Latta at 7:00 p.m.

Final Stats: Bailey led the team with 16 points, Henderson was right behind with 13. Weeks, in limited time on the court, was in double figures with 12. Wagnon was next with 7 followed by Bohannon with 4 and Herndon had 3. O’Steen had 2. No one had more than 2 fouls.
