In a remarkable display of determination and camaraderie, Chad Gambel and Mark Meeks recently completed a grueling 50-mile race at the age of 50. This extraordinary challenge, the 4th annual Love Never Ends Trail Run, took place on land owned by a close friend of theirs.
They said when they learned about the event, they couldn’t resist the chance to make a memorable statement: '50 for 50!' Gambel clocked in at an impressive 14 hours and 54 minutes, while the duo shared a powerful motivation for their endeavor.
“We wanted to show other 50-year-olds that anybody can do it and to never give up,” Gambel explained.
Meeks echoed this sentiment, noting that their journey was about proving that age is just a number.
“As you go through life, sometimes you have to make yourself do hard things to remind yourself that you can do hard things. I refuse to get old!” Meeks said passionately.
The mental aspect of the race proved to be the biggest challenge for both men. Gambel admitted that pushing through significant injuries around mile 16 was tough, while Meeks dealt with painful blisters that made every step a struggle.
“From mile 30 to 50, it was like walking on razor blades,” Meeks shared. “Focusing on the goal was hard, but that was the only option.”
Despite the difficulties, both Gambel and Meeks are open to doing it again.
“Would we do it again? Hahaha. Ask me in about a week” Gambel said jokingly, adding that he has aspirations of tackling a 100-mile trail race and even trying an Ironman.
Meeks, on the other hand, was more enthusiastic about a potential second attempt.
“Of course! Why not? We’ll finish 3-4 hours faster next time,” he stated confidently.
The event, organized by Karen A. Sparks, the founder of The Great Root Movement (TGRM), was not just a race but a testament to resilience and community support. Sparks, whohastransformed her own grief into a mission ofempowerment, encouraged every racer and honored her children, Reagan and Grant, throughout the event.
Herpresenceaddedalayer of inspiration that resonated with participants, including Gambel and Meeks.
“Karen had pictures of her kids everywhere,” Gambel remarked, reflecting on the emotional atmosphere. “It was a heartbreaking story of healing, and it made the race even more meaningful.”
Gambel and Meeks exemplify the spirit of perseverance and community that defines local athletes. Their journey serves as a reminder that with determination, anyone can conquer their challenges, regardless of age.
