Oakland discussed dumpster drama

The town of Oakland held their monthly meeting on Decenber 9. The council approved housekeeping items such as purchase orders and the minutes to the previous meeting.

The council approved the agenda item allowing Tanner Gentis to sell his vacation back. Some organizations allow the employee to sell back their vacation. This means that instead of getting paid for a week off of work, they will just get an extra week of pay on their paycheck.

Once those items were done, council member Sam Dishmon brought up an issue the town has been having; the town’s dumpsters.

The dumpsters are for paying residents only, and no building materials or dead animals are allowed to be dumped in them.

Apparently, this is the main issue with the dumpsters. People, even some non-residents, are using the dumpsters to get rid of building materials. This makes the dumpsters overflow and leave no room for the paying residents.

Dishmon recommended putting signs up around the dumpsters, informing people of the rules. Rhonda Whitsett said there are stickers on the dumpsters, but Dishmon said that is not enough.

He recommended putting the signs up, then, if people do not start taking heed of the rules, the town will be forced to take the next step. They will have to decide how to implement tickets and how to force the resident’s to pay said tickets.

Even though it might be a long tedious road to write tickets to the offenders, then figuring out how to enforce the law, it is a step the town must take, Dishmon said.

“The first step is putting the signs up, so they know we’re serious,” Dishmon told the other council members.

The motion was approved, and Whitsett is going to order the signs to get enforcing the ordinance in motion. Now, the town is tasked with figuring out the next step they need to take.
