On September 9, at the Oakland monthly town council meeting, Mayor John Moss ended the event with a bombshell with his announcement surprising everybody in attendance.

He announced he wants to step down as Mayor of Oakland. Moss has been on the council for many years, serving at some capacity or another. If the math adds up, his latest run as mayor has spanned well over ten years.

Town Clerk Rhonda Whitsett said his term of mayor traverses back before she came on board.

“He was mayor when I started, and I’ve been here ten years,” Whitsett stated.

Moss said he is wanting to step down because he has quite a bit going on in his personal life that he needs to tend to first.

“I have some personal and health issues that I need to take care of,” Moss reiterated after dropping the bombshell at the meeting.

By law, a discussion and vote on whether or not to accept his downgrade to council member must be added to next month’s meeting.

If the council accepts his request to step down, and Moss does in fact step down, then, Sam Dishmon will be Mayor Pro Tem until the council votes in a new mayor and vice mayor.

Some cities hold at-large elections, meaning the residents vote directly for mayor. However, Oakland is one of the towns that gives the designation of mayor to the elected council members.
