Meet the city official: Oakland Mayor John Moss

Editor's note: The Madill Record is going to be running a weekly segment about city and county officials in Marshall County.

John Moss Sr. is a lifelong resident of Marshall County and the Mayor of the Town of Oakland. Moss was born in Kingston and Geneva, his late wife was born in Shay. They raised their family in the area, as well.

Moss and his wife have a large family. He boasted that they have 50 grandchildren, 76 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren, most of whom also live in the county. The Moss family roots definitely run deep in the Marshall County area.

The Madill Record did a short Q&A to help Marshall County residents get to know Moss.

Please tell the readers a little bit about yourself to begin with A:“Iwasbornandraisedin Kingston, Marshall County, Okla. and I attended Kingston Public Schools. I moved to Oakland in 2000” Q: What is your career/ background and education?

A: ”I joined U.S. Air Force in1965, went to Aircraft maintenance school in the Air Force. After the military, I worked construction, then was a truck driver. I am a member of Oklahoma Municipal league School with 40 hours.”

Q: Anything else that you would like to share about yourself and your family?

A::”Iamacancersurvivor, lung cancer.”

Q: How long have you been on the city council of Oakland?

A:“IhavebeenonOakland city council since 2005.”

Q:Howlonghaveyoubeen mayor?

A: “12 years.” Q: How is Oakland different from the towns around them?

A: “Oakland is the senior town in Marshall County, and should be treated as so.”

Q: What is your vision for the Town of Oakland as it grows?

A: “I would like to upgrade our infrastructure, streets and alleys.”

Q: Are you excited for the growth that is happening all around Marshall county?

A: “Yes.” Q: What do you consider is the biggest need in the community of Oakland and the surrounding county?

A: “Honesty, integrity.” Q: What do you want Marshall County residents to know about you and the community you serve?

A: “If we all work together for the best interest of the citizens and the community, this county can flourish.' he said. 'For them to live in Oakland, they have to commute back to Madill. ”
