Nobody wants to experience the feeling of helplessness when somebody around them is choking. Lucky for a little girl in Kingston, she was in the right place when tragedy almost struck.

On November 16, 2023, the Kingston Police Department was doing their 3rd Annual Tip-A-Cop fundraiser at Geckos for their Shop with a Cop event. During this event, a young girl, approximately eight years old, began choking and couldn’t breathe.

Kingston Police Chief Kasey Cox recognized that the girl was in trouble and rushed to her aid. He initially stood her up, and performed a couple of back thrusts When that didn’t work, Cox performed the Heimlich maneuver.

Thankfully, that worked, and the little girl expelled the obstruction and began breathingagain.Thisalmosttraumatic event made Cox think about what could have happened if he or somebody else who is CPR trained was not around.

Cox is a certified CPR instructor and decided to offer training to businesses and restaurants to help educate and give the community basic life-saving skills to save somebody’slife.ThefirstCPR instruction training will be held on January 25 at 8:00 a.m. at Geckos in Kingston.
