Famous Oklahomans: Tisha Campbell

October is often thought of as a month full of spooky and creepy festivities. The musical “Little Shop of Horrors” seems to fit right into this criterion. The musical in itself is not famous for this October’s Famous Oklahomans but Tisha Campbell, the one spotlighted, certainly is.

Campbell was born October 13, 1968, in Oklahoma City, Okla. She debuted in “Little Shop Of Horrors”, the musical directed by Frank Oz in 1986, where she was a chorus girl named Chiffon. This musical may have been Campbell’s debut, but it certainly was not her first appearance on the big screen.

“The Big Blue Marble”,a PBSTVshowaboutapen-pal club of children around the world, was Campbell’s first appearance at the age of six. Campbell then appeared in othertelevisionshowsincluding “Unicorn Tales” and the iconic “Captain Kangaroo”.

Campbell was raised in Newark, NJ where she attended and graduated from the Arts High School then attended Washington Academy of Music. After formal education, Campbell moved to Hollywood and become the star of “Rags to Riches”, and shortly after, starred in the musical comedy drama film “School Daze” directed by Spike Lee.

Campbell then propelled into other iconic shows, such as “House Party 1,2 and 3”, and a starring role in the 1997 comedy film “Sprung”. In 1992, Campbell landed another roll in the extremely familiar Fox television series “Martin” playing the role as Gina who was Martins on again, off again love interest according. After “Martin”, Campbell appeared in many parts across television and big screen including; “The Sweetest Girl”, “The Last Place on Earth”, “Lemonade Mouth”, “The J Team”, “The Simone Biles Story: Courage to Soar”, “Rags to Riches”, “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”, “A Different World”, “Blossom” and a long list of others.

Campbell received many accolades and awards. Some of them include: 1991 Independent Spirit Award, 1996, 1997,2002,2003,2004,2005,2 009,2010ImageAward,1997 Image Award, 2004 BET Comedy Award and 2005 BET Comedy Award.
