Jeff Solomons is an entrepreneur who said innovation can be found even in the most unexpected places. By identifying a little-discussed but very real problem, what started as a way to support his son has grown into a resource for families.
Solomons is the founder of CemeteryPlotListings.com, a new website designed to connect individuals looking to buy or sell cemetery plots inastreamlined, transparent online marketplace. The idea was born out of a growing awareness that thousands of families across the country own burial plots they no longer need, while others are searching, often urgently, for available and affordable options.
“People don’t talk about it much, but this is a real issue for families,” Solomons said. “Life changes. People move. Family plans change. And yet cemetery plots are often treated as non-transferable, even though there’s demand on both sides.”
The website functions much like a traditional classified or real estate listing service. Sellers can list unused cemetery plots, completewithlocationdetails and pricing, while buyers can search by city, cemetery or state. Solomons said the goal is to provide clarity and convenience in a process that is often confusing and emotionally stressful.
Industry data shows that cemetery plots can appreciate in value over time, particularly in urban areas where land is limited. Despite that, many owners are unaware they have options beyond selling plots back to cemeteries, often at a loss or letting them sit unused.
Solomons said he believes CemeteryPlotListings.com fills that gap.
“This isn’t about being morbid,” he noted. “It’s about helping families make practical decisions and easing a financial and emotional burden during difficult moments.”
While still in its early stages, the site has already drawn interest from both sellersandbuyersnationwide. Solomons said he plans to expand the platform’s features in the coming months, including educational resources on cemetery regulations, transfers and legal considerations, which can vary widely by state and cemetery. As online marketplaces continue to reshape traditional industries, Solomons’ venture highlights how entrepreneurship often starts with simply noticing an unmet need.
“There are problems everywhere,” he said. “You just have to be willing to look at the ones most people avoid.”
