4-H Summer Workshops on the books

The Marshall County OSU Extension office held their annual 4-H Summer Workshops June 21-25. 4-H members attended weeklong workshops that highlighted the vast range of project areas available within 4-H. On Monday, Madison Deeds with the State 4-H Office presented the Health Rocks! Program. The program is designed to empower youth to establish life-long healthy habits through reducing tobacco, alcohol, e-cigarette/ vaping and drug use. The day was wrapped up with making fruit smoothies with the 4-H Blender Bike. Tuesday and Wednesday consisted of two Southeast District events, Animal Science Field Day and FCS Skills Day. Animal Science Field Day, held at the Johnston County Fair Barn focused on the exploration of livestock production issues related to youth livestock projects. The Murray State College Veterinary Technology Program and the Murray State College Farm were instrumental in providing hands on activities for participants. For FCS Skills Day, 4-H members traveled to Coalgate to try their hand at sewing and learn about etiquette, table setting, and much more! Thursday was structured to highlight natural resources. The Johnston County Conservation District led the morning workshop focused on soil health, soil samples, and plant identification. In the afternoon, Oklahoma 4-H STEMist, Caitlin Dreher presented the Wonders of Water program. 4-H members learned about the water cycle, how aquifers work while constructing their own and how to filter the water that was pumped. The fun filled week concluded on Friday with a Bee Keeping demonstration led by Texoma Beekeepers Association members, Pat Tickel and Alysa Quitoriano.
