Officials with the Durant Police Department reported that an arrest warrant has been issued for Ryan Capps, a former Durant Middle School teacher. Durant police said that Durant Independent School District Superintendent Duane Merideth contacted them that Capps, a male from Kingston, had allegedly been in an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old girl. Brandon Mitchell, a Durant police detective verified that an arrest warrant has been issued for Capps. He is facing charges for Child Sexual Abuse and Indecent Proposals to a Child Under 16. Capps is not in custody yet, and the investigation is still underway.
Capps is a graduate of Kingston High School and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He was also a member of the golf team.
Durant ISD declined to speak about the investigation, but did confirm that Capps is no longer an employee of the school district.
Some parents are worried that there might be more victims. One parent was interviewed by KTen and wished to remain anonymous.
"I know this person has spent time with my daughter, and I know we've not been notified about anything," the parent said. "So how many other victims are there?"
Mitchell said there are steps parents can take to ensure the safety of their children and make sure they haven’t been victimized by Capps.
"If they have any concerns that their child was a victim or know something about it, then they need to go through their phone, speak to their children and definitely report it to the police department," Mitchell said in an interview.
