The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence dubbed October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1981. This was done as a day of unity to connect battered women’s advocates across the country.

Domestic Violence runs rampant everywhere, even in small rural Oklahoma areas. According to the Oklahoma Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board, one Oklahoman dies every five days as a result of domestic violence.

Many organizations world wide make it their life’s work to figure out how to lower the staggering high statistic numbers.

The Family Shelter of Southern Oklahoma is one of those organizations. It was “created to give hope and the voice back to victims in abusive relationships.”

The company’s mission is a simple, yet strong one. “The mission of the Family Shelter of Southern Oklahoma is to provide safety, relief and support for persons who have suffered physical and emotional abuse as a result of family violence, sexual assault and stalking.”

FSSO offers many services to victims of domestic violence like advocacy, an emergency shelter, crisis intervention, education and counseling.

For anybody that has been affected by domestic violence, be it personally, or know a victim, the FSSO can be contacted at (580) 226-3750.
