Christmas holiday tragedies

Two tragedies have struck Marshall County in the past week. These two tragedies have left the families reeling in the wake of the storms. On December 22, 2021, Kaci Wise was driving her 2020 Chevy Malibu and drove off the highway for an unknown reason. Wise, 29, and her unborn daughter were both killed in the accident, leaving behind her fiance Charlie Clayton and their young daughter.

Many friends and family members took to Facebook to send their love to Wise and her family and memorialize just what she meant to them. One person posted, “You were the most caring, funny, beautiful whirlwind I've had the pleasure to know. The world has lost a special light. Fly high and shine bright sweet Kaci.”

Another friend posted, “I want to remember you for you happy full of life, beautiful self! I’ll forever have your beautiful smile & your cute little candy Lou who nose etched in my mind forever.”

A GoFundMe account has been set up to try and raise money for the funeral and assist Clayton with things their young daughter might need. The other tragedy occurred on Carter Lake Road on December 27, 2021. Dorothy Flanagan, 88, died in a house fire. The Madill Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire.

Her son, Shawn Flanagan, tried to get her out of the house, but could not reach her due to the heat. The house was fully engulfed. He said in an interview with KXII that his mother was a beautiful person.

“God-fearing, she loved her church, her church family, her bible school,” Flanagan said in the interview. “She was just a wonderful person. Kind and sweet and never raised her voice at anybody.”

The family not only lost their matriarch, they also lost their home. The family has set up a GoFundMe to assist with funeral costs and to help get back on their feet.
