Kingston v Tishomingo

The Kingston Redskins faced the Tishomingo Indians on February 1, 2022. After a slow start, the Redskins and Coach Taylor Wiebener, took this specific Lake Country conference game. Final score was 42 to 34, Redskins over the Indians.

The Redskins were still without their senior forward Braden Matchen. No word yet when he will return to the lineup.

The low scoring first quarter would be a preview of how the game would be. Sophmore Reed Cason had two field goals and Brady Brister matched him with two of his own. The only other Redskins to score was Mason Burkhalter who was 1 of 2 from the line. The Indians held a four-point lead, 13 to 9, after the first quarter.

In the second, Brister again had two field goals and hit his only free throw attempt. Cason had a field goal and was 2 of 2 from the line. Dakota Wiebener hit a three pointer. Meanwhile, the Indians scored a paltry four points, all from the free throw line. No field goals. At the half, Redskins led, 21 to 17.

Third quarter action saw the Redskins holding service. Brister and Cason each had field goals. The difference was, Cason was five of five from the line. Still, the Indians struggled, they had a four-point quarter. The Redskins continued to lead. They increased their lead by nine points, 30 to 21.

The fourth quarter had Cason scoring all the field goals the Redskins would get. He had two and a free throw. From here on out it was all free throws. Tucker Rumer went 2 of 2, and Brister went 2 of 3. Gage Gill went 2 of 4 and Burkhalter was 1of 2. The Redskins allowed thirteen but held on to win, final score was 42 to 34.

Box score: Cason had 20 points, Brister was next with 13. Wiebener had three, Burkhalter, Rumer, and Gill, all with two points each. From the free throw line, 17 of 21, 81 %. Cason himself was a perfect 8 of 8 from the line.

Kingston V Comanche

After all the weather-related cancelations during the snow and ice, Coach Taylor Wiebener and the Redskins had to be back on the court. The Redskins aced the Comanche Indians on February 8, and took home the victory, 41 to 24.

The Redskins fortunately were the taller team. They also defended well and rebounded on both ends. It was a good strategy and they stuck with it all night. In the first, the Indians found out that Reed Cason at 6’7” was hard to shoot over. In fact he had two blocks and had two buckets to start the game. He was 1 of 2 from the line. Braden Matchen, Brady Brister and Mason Burkhalter all had buckets. Matchen got to the line and was 1 of 2. The Redskins led by 4, 12 to 8.

The second quarter was like a broken record. Cason again made himself at home in the paint. He had two buckets, and a nice two-handed slam. He was 2 of 3 from the line. Brister and Matchen again had buckets. At the half, Redskins in the lead, 22 to 15.

It was a low scoring third quarter with Brister and Cason doing all the scoring. Brister had two buckets, Cason had two buckets, one dunk, but missed his two free throw attempts. The Redskins still led going into the final quarter 30 to 21.

Brister again had two buckets and Burkhalter added two himself. With 5:06 to play and the Redskins leading by eight, the Indians called timeout and came back with a plan to foul early and often. They had fouls to give, but it did look awfully early to start sending the Redskins to the line. They targeted Tucker Rumer. Tucker responded by going four of four from the charity stripe. Cason Reed was 1 of 2 from the line. At 1:40 mark, both teams emptied their benches. Redskins won 41 to 24.

Box score: Cason lead the team with 16 points. Next up was Brister with 10 points. Burkhalter had six, Matchen with five and Rumer had four. As a team, from the free throw line, 9 of 16 for 56 %.

Kingston v Sulphur

The Redskins and Coach Taylor Wiebener were back on the court, less than 24 hours after traveling to Dickson and defeating the Comets. The Redskins faced the Sulphur Bulldogs and won in a low scoring game, 43 to 39.

This was not a usual Redskins outing where they are pushing the ball up court at every opportunity. The defense was good by both teams. Mason Burkhalter had two buckets. Braden Matchen had a field goal and Gage Gill hit a nice three pointer. After one quarter, Redskins trailed by one, 7 to 6.

The Redskins took the lead with a Cole Morgan three pointer. After that, both teams were trading baskets back and forth. Brister and Dakota Wiebener had three pointers as well. Tucker Rumer was 2 of 2 from the line. Despite the height advantage, Cason Reed was held without a basket in the first half. Still the Redskins trailed by one, 18 to 17, going to the locker room.

In the third, the inside game finally started to come around. Matchen had three buckets and a free throw. Brister had a bucket as did Cason who also had two free throws. The Redskins clinged to a 30 to 26 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Brister made his move by hitting two field goals. Burkhalter had a nice move to the bucket for a layup, but Cason was getting inside for dunks. He had two of them almost back to back. When the Bulldogs tried to come inside themselves, Cason was ready with two blocks on the same play. With the Redskins walking the ball up and using as much clock as they could, the Bulldogs had to foul. Brister just made sure the ball stayed in his hands. He went 3 for 3. The Redskins won by a small margin, but it was a win none-the-less, 43 to 36.

Box score: Brister led the team with 12 points, Matchen was next with nine, Cason was right behind him with eight. Burkhalter went for six, Morgan and Wiebener each had three pointers. The free throw line was kind, 8 of 10 for 80%.
