As the football season is winding down, the basketball teams are preparing for their season openers. Lady Redskin Head Coach Chad Rumer and Redskin Head Coach Bobby McAdoo said theyanxiouslyawaittipoffon November28athomeagainst the Atoka Wampus Cats.

The Lady Redskins have hadabusysummerattending teamcampsatAmber,Vinita and hosting one of their own. They also sent a tournament teamtoDenton,Texastoplay in an AAU High School Division tournament. Hard work and stiff competition was the emphasis for the “off season” schedule.

Rumer will begin his 27 th year of coaching this season. He has worked with experiencedteamsandyoung teams and the 2023-2024 Lady Redskins will be a well-balanced group. He will have two seniors, three juniors, one sophomore and the remainder of the squad will be filled with freshman. This will be a situation where young players will be called upon to contribute. Rumer said there is still work to be done, but he’s confident the team will flourish.

“They haven’t yet caught up to the speed and the physicality of the high school game yet”, Rumer explained. “But I am confident that the game will have slowed down for them, and they will be ready when the playoff season starts.”

This is not a “run-of-themill“ group of 9 th graders; they have only been beaten once in four years.

McAdoo begins his second season as the Redskins’ head coach. Last year was a challenge for him as the squad had no seniors and only two juniors and they were very young.

Thisyear’ssquadwillhave three seniors, seven juniors and seven sophomores. He alsohasaverytalentedfreshman squad that has been undefeated the last four years. This past summer, the Redskins traveled to Southeastern Oklahoma State University and Sulphur for team camps, and then hosted one of their own. Over the vacation, they were only beaten twice, one a buzzer beater to Class 5A from Azle, Texas. They also had a win against Gainesville, Texas. McAdoo said he was pleased with the participation of the entire squad.

“Instead of going to the lake, they were here and working hard, and I appreciated that” he said.

The Lake Country Conference will look different this season. The Comanche Indians and the Tishomingo Indians havewithdrawnfromthe LCC. So far, as of now, there are no plans to replace them. To fill those spots on the schedule, the KHS teams will travel to Idabel and to Hugo. One of the biggest crowds of the season will for sure be the game with Silo at the KMAC on December the 15.
