On January 8, 2021, the Lady Redskins went head-tohead with the Talihina girls in the first game of second round play in the 2021 New Years Classic. Following last night’s defeat by Broken Bow, the girls were ready for action. Unfortunately for Talihina, the doubling up in the post did not work for this game. Talihina did not have the height to stop Avri Weeks. This was a wire to wire win for Coach Rumer and his team with the final score of 53 to 17.

Even in the warmup, it appeared this might get ugly. The first quarter started and ended with Weeks taking the ball strongly to the goal. She was active on the defensive end as well controlling the boards and forcing turnovers. This opened up the floor for Ryan Herndon to break out for fast break points.

Most were from long outlet passes from Weeks which worked very well. Weeks had 12 points and Herndon had two layups. On the other side the defense was trouble for Talihina as they turned the ball over. Kamry Bohannon, Raegan Davis and Emi O’Steen were making it very difficult for Talihina to bring the ball up the court. At the buzzer, the Lady Redskins comfortably lead 16 to 2.

The second quarter proved to be more of the same with Weeks running the floor and scoring, and rebounding. Herndon continued to get away from the defense and score layups. Weeks had seven and Herndon had four. Ethel Stewart relieved Weeks and had a field goal and was 2 of 2 from the line. Half time could not come quick enough for Talihina. They trailed 33 to 6.

In the third quarter, Coach Rumer let the varsity play the first two and a half minutes. Long enough for Weeks to get three more, Herndon to get two more field goals, then he turned things over to the second and third strings. Chloe Cargill hit a three pointer. Kaya Weibner and Britt O’Steen both had goals to finish out the quarter. Lady Redskins ended the third quarter leading 47 to eight.

The fourth quarter went quickly with Laney French as a point guard. Everyone saw action including Britt O’Steen who had two field goals and was a perfect 2 of 2 from the line. Final score, 53 to 17.

Box score: Weeks finished with 24 points and was 2 of 3 from the line. Herndon was next with 12 and was 1 of 2 from the line. Britt O’Steen had a total of eight including 2 of 2 from the stripe. Cargill had three, Weibner and Stewart both had two.

The girls moved on to the third round in the consolation final.
