Lady Redskins vs Madill Lady Wildcats

The Lady Redskins and Coach Chad Rumer got off to a good start at the Wampus Cat Classic on January 19 with a win over the Lady Wildcats of Madill. The final score was 43 to 22. With the temperature nearing 70 degrees outside, the” shooting” was frigid and near freezing inside the Atoka gym.

As both teams missed shot after shot in the first, senior Kamry Bohannon bailed out her teammates with two buckets and managed 1 of 2 from the line. The Lady Redskins missedlayupshots,and three point attempts.

SeniorOliviaQuapawwas 1 of 2 from the line and the Lady Redskins scored six total points in the quarter. The Lady Wildcats was held to six points themselves. The score, 6 to 6.

After Quapaw was held to one point in the first, she carried the team in the second. She started with a three and then ran off four buckets from in the paint. She also got to the line for 1 of 2. That’s a twelve point quarter. Senior Kaya Wiebener chipped in two points, senior Lanie French had a bucket, and the Lady Redskins were up 22 to 10.

In the third quarter, the shooting freeze was still on. It was back to Bohannon again. She responded with three buckets. Usually, she is steady from the charity stripe. However, not in this game, she was 0 for 2.

After missing two free throws earlier, Quapaw found her stride and was 2 of 2. She also had a field goal. Senior Ethel Stewart was 1 of 2 from the line and Wiebener hit a long three pointer. The score after three, 36 to 15.

The fourth quarter had Quapaw hitting a bucket and she was 2 of 2 from the line. Emily Bellettini had a three pointer.CoachRumerturned the game over to the second squad at the three-minute mark. The final score was 43 to 22.

Box score: Quapaw lead the team with 21 points, next up was Bohannon who had 11. Wiebener had five, Bellettini three , French two and Stewart one.

LadyRedskinsVSBroken Bow

The Lady Redskins took on Broken Bow in the second round of the Wampus Cat Classic on January 20. This game is one that will hurt for a while. After leading in the first quarter by 15 points the Lady Redskins fell in overtime, 58 to 55, to Broken Bow.

At times in the first quarter, theLadyRedskinslooked as if they might run away with this game. In fact, they led by fifteen at one point. The scoring was coming from all over.

Kaya Wiebener and Jaci Herndon each had two three pointers. Emily Bellettini had three field goals. Olivia Quapaw had a bucket and a freethrow.KamryBohannon had a bucket. That’s a 23 point quarter. However, to the credit of their opponent, they recovered to score 11 to stay within striking distance.

In the second, the cold shooting virus from the prior game reared its ugly head again. In fact, the Lady Redskins could not hit a field goal. They only managed four total points in the quarter, and they all came from the free throw line. Bellettini was 3 of 3, Ethel Stewart was 1 of 2. Bohannon was 0 for 2. Meanwhile,BrokenBowkept chipping away and going to the locker room, they only trailed by 6, 27 to 21.

The third proved a little better as Lanie French and Herndon each had three pointers. Bohannon had a bucket and was 2 of 3 from the line. However, Broken Bow just would not give in. Going to the fourth quarter Kingston trailed by five, 37 to 32.

In the fourth quarter, Herndon had another three and a field goal. She was 0 for 2 from the line. Quapaw had a three pointer. Bellettini hadtwofieldgoalsbutmissed her only free throw attempt. Meanwhile, Broken Bow was getting to the line and they were making theirs. They were 6 of 8 and off to overtime they went.

In overtime, Quapaw had the only field goal, a three pointer. She was also 1 of 2 from the line. Wiebener was 2 of 2 from the line. Stewart got to the line but could not convert.

Herndonmissedherthreepoint attemptwith10seconds to play and Quapaw got a shot off from way behind half court at the buzzer. Broken Bow won 58 to55.

Box score: Herndon lead the team with 14 points. Next was Bellettini with 13. She was followed by Quapaw who had 10 and Bohannon with six. French had three and Stewart had one. The team from the line was 10 of 22, or 45%. By comparison, Broken Bow was 17 of 34, or 50%

Lady Redskins vs Latta

The ride home from Atoka was better on January 21 compared to Friday. The Lady Redskin players, coaches, and fans were probably in a much better frame of mind. The Lady Redskins took care of business, put the work in, and prevailed over a good Latta team. The final score was, 51 to 39, and the LadyRedskinstookhomethe consolation trophy.

As Latta always seems to have plenty of height, this season is no different. Emily Bellettini came out of the gates running and had three field goals. Kamry Bohannon wasrightbehindherwithtwo field goals. Olivia Quapaw had a nice three pointer. The effort was there and the defensewassound. TheLady Redskins were up by three points, 16 to 13.

The momentum carried right on in the second mostly due to the long range bombs that Lanie French and Quapaw were dropping. They each had two three pointers. KayaWiebenerandBellettini each had a field goal. The lead increased a bit and the Lady Redskins went to the locker rooms with a 32 to 24 lead.

Both teams played evenly in the third. Ethel Stewart had a field goal as did Bellettini. She made good from the free-throw line going 3 of 3. Bohannon perfect at the line going 2 of 2. At the 4:00 mark the Lady Redskins were up 40 to 28. At the quarter, the score was 42 to 34.

Quapaw made sure they did not end up with another trip to overtime as they did the previous night with another three pointer and a field goal. Bellettini had a bucket. French and Bohannon each had free throws. The final score was 51 to 39.

Box score: Bellettini had 16 points to lead the team, Quapaw was next with 15. Bohannon had 10 points and the top three scorers were all indoublefigures.Frenchwith seven, StewartandWiebener had two.

Later in the evening, after the championship finals, the all tournament teams were announced. Seniors Kamry Bohannon and Olivia Quapaw werenamedtothesquad.
