Barns notches solo win in state wrestling

Facingruggedcompetition at the state wrestling tournament in Oklahoma City last weekend, wins were tough to come by for Madill wrestlers.

The Wildcat grapplers finished with one triumph, which came in the boys’ division where sophomore Triston Barnes notched a 5-2 decision over Sallisaw’s Mason Duke in the opening round.

Barnes however suffered two straight defeats to bow out of the event, dropping a 3:46 fall to Cooper Jackson of Tuttle as well as an 8-4 decision loss to Landon Jones from Sulphur.

In the girls’ bracket, junior Morgan Walls dropped a 1:38 fall decision to Libbee Pendergraf from Kiefer in a qualifying match at 170 pounds.

Sophomore Madelyn Ritchie had a pair of matches at 190 pounds, falling to Zoe Stark of Locust Grove in a 1:21 fall in round one and then a 1:52 fall verdict to Little Axe’s Emily McDaniel.

Fellow sophomore Madison Barrow also suffered back-to-back losses in her first state tournament, dropping a 44-second fall to Stacey Nash from McLoud as well as a 4-2 decision setback against Tuttle’s MiKayla Reed.
