The Madill Rose Garden Club awarded October’s Yard of the Month to Andres and Maribel Guevara of 15 Francis Street. Their yard is the pride and joy of Andres Guevara. It is also a master class in container gardening.

The front, west side and backyard is covered in containers of various sizes and reused from a previous life. The theme and use of the margarita sweet potato is the focal point of the yard as the chartreuse color is used throughout all the various beds.

The Guevaras have lived in their home 28 years. Year in, year out as well as season in and season out, it is one of the yards in town that can be “counted on” to be colorful and well kept. Guevara is mindful of his water use and only waters every two to three days.

The front porch is covered in pots of Dracaena Trifasciata also known as “Motherin Law Tongue” or “Snake Plant.” In the near full shade spot, he also grows hostas, begonias and asparagus fern. Viewing from the street are pink flowering plants from Florida.

The west side of the house has various containers: wheelbarrow, wash tub and even a commode completely covered in sweet potato vine. Other plants used are creeping jenny, elephant ears and chrysanthemums in bud. He also has used white rock as visual interest and to prevent water run-off.

The cellar in the backyard is covered with various plants including pepper plants heavily laden with peppers and growing as tall as a small tree. He also has a greenhouse in the backyard. The various containers will be overwintered there as well as inside his home awaiting Spring of 2024.
