A year of firsts & a year of unknowns

Like many of you I travelled for the Christmas holiday. I drove up I-35 to visit my parents in Oklahoma City. My daughter and I hung out with them for a couple of days. Presents were opened and many calories were consumed.

At some point after consuming some chocolate pie, I had an epiphany. 2019 was a year of firsts for me and 2020 will be a year of unknowns.

Now, this epiphany gave way to some thoughts that I had plenty of time to let flow since my daughter and I were watching Teen Titans Go to the Movies.

Let’s start with the firsts of the past year. The obviously one is where I live. If you haven’t already guessed, I am a city boy through and through. I’ve always lived on base (my dad is retired Air Force), or in the confines of Oklahoma City or Norman. As you can imagine, I experienced a bit of a culture shock when I came to Madill back in April 2019 as I’ve never lived in a small town.

It’s definitely been an adjustment but one that is worthwhile.

Each week since I’ve been in Marshall County has had its own ups and down. It feels like every week had some kind of first. Many of these were of the variety that I’ve since forgotten.

However, others are burned into my memory. On the positive side of things, I covered my first rodeo this year: the 73rd Annual Madill Round Up Club Rodeo.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I covered a homicide for the first time in August. There aren’t words to convey the experience of standing in a place where someone took not one life, but three.

But as hard as stories like that were to write, I’ve had the honor of meeting countless new people here in our county. I say our county because Marshall County is my home now and many of you have welcomed me with open arms for which I am thankful.

I hope you will join me in look forward to the unknowns 2020 will bring our way.
