As superintendent of Kingston Public Schools, I have spent more than two decades serving thiscommunity, witnessing both its challenges and opportunities. Today, we stand at a crossroads with an opportunity that could benefit our school district and county for generations: the proposed Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District on Lake Texoma to support the development of Pointe Vista.
There has been some confusion about what a TIF is and how it affects our schools. Let me be clear: this TIF district is not a tax increase. It does not take money away from our schools or local services. Instead, it captures NEW tax revenue specifically generated by this development and reinvests it into critical infrastructure - roads, utilities, and other improvements needed to make this project a success.
What does this mean for our local schools? Simply put, it’s a game-changer. Over the life of the TIF, Kingston Public Schools is projected to receive over $140 million in additional funding – funding that would otherwise not exist. These resources will allow us to invest in state-of-the-art facilities, modernize classrooms, and expand educational opportunities for our students. For example, this additional revenue source could help fund the creation of a combined career tech training program for KingstonandMadillPublicSchools.
Kingston has a long history of growth and resilience. I remember when we proposed a bond measure yearsagotobuildourmulti-purpose activity center. At the time, some in thecommunitywereskeptical. They wondered if we really needed it, if the cost was worth it. But today, that facility has transformed our district, allowing us to host major events, generate revenue, and offer opportunities that were once out of reach to our kids. I firmly believe we will look back on the Pointe Vista TIF the same way – with gratitude that we had the foresight to invest in our future.
Beyond the financial benefits, this development will bring new jobs, tourism, and economic stability to Marshall County. With Lake Texoma as a natural asset, we have the chance to create a destination that attracts visitors from across the region. Increased tourism means increased local tax revenue-fundsthatwillsupportour schools, emergency services, and public infrastructure without placing a burden on our local taxpayers.
Some have expressed concerns about potential student growth due to new housing. Growth is inevitable, but it’s a sign of a thriving community. Kingston Schools is already preparing, with new classroom buildingsinprogress.Withthe additional funding from the TIF, we will be well-equipped to expand and accommodatefuturestudentswhile maintaining our high standards of education.
It’s easy to resist change. But as I tell my students, standing still is not an option. We either move forward and embrace new opportunities, or we fall behind. The Pointe Vista TIF is a bold step forward - one that will strengthenourschools, enhanceour community, and secure a brighter future for Kingston kids.
I encourage everyone to look at the facts, consider the long-term benefits, and support this initiative.
