The Kingston Cross Country teamcompetedonOctober 29 at the state meet in Edmond. Senior Brycen Ward finished third overall in the state in boys’ class 3A high school cross country with a finish time of 16:38. Ward said even though he placed third, he was hoping to be champion.

“The outcome of the state meet was a little hard to swallow because I was so close to achieving my goal of being a cross country state champion,” he said. “However, I had no regrets leaving the state meet because I set my self-up for success and truly finished on empty. As I reflect on my season, I see good things I accomplished and the deeper aerobic fitness I gained.”

He also said he is looking toward the future.

“I’m really excited to carry over my endurance to the track oval this coming spring,” Ward said. “In the past couple of years as I have gotten bigger and stronger, my ability has manifested itself more in the mid-distance events in track. I can’t wait to see what Coach McGowan has in plan for my final high school season. I already have some lofty goals in mind.”

Ward plans on running track in college and has a few schools in his sights.

“As for my plans after graduating, I believe I’ll just be competing in track in college, and I’ve narrowed down my future school to either Tulsa or Oklahoma State,” he said. “I haven’t decided which one I’ll be attending yet, but I’m happy that the opportunities have presented themselves.”
